A Swedish court has rejected WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's appeal against a detention order in a rape case.
...
An international arrest warrant was issued for Mr Assange on 20 November following the detention order decision by the Swedish district court two days earlier.

When the allegations first emerged, Mr Assange said their appearance - at a time when Wikileaks had been criticised for leaking Afghan war documents - was "deeply disturbing".

I tend to think that this is a smear campaign, mainly because of the timing of this and how much better off the US would be if he was in jail.
Though the US government is going to take down wikileaks any ways with some new copyright legislation, so why would they do this?

Well, I don't know any of the facts, I'm not a member of the court they will be presented to.
I have not enough information to even form an opinion.
The fact that he founded a website that's been a pain in the ass of many governments doesn't mean he may not also be a cruel rapist

It's certainly an interesting case. As you'd expect, some of the tale is available @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_assange#2010_legal_difficulties_and_charges . I'm not sure where I stand, although I have an innate distrust of authority...

Well, me too, but on the other hand, how would you feel if you were a rape victim and people just dismissed your accusations because the rapist was famous?
The wiki-page only gives his side of the story, of course

Precisely, it's a serious crime so I err on the side of wait and see. As for wikipedia's take, I would think it's just what is currently in the public domain, not 'his side of the story'; he's likely to have said more about the case than the prosecution authorities at this juncture.

By far most of the comments on the news pages I've seen about this read "No way, this is a cover-up."
I don't agree. It could be true, it could be false. Only facts matter in this case. I do find the timing to be quite suspicious and I also wonder if interpol always issues red notices for people who don't show up in court. It'll be interesting to see if Wikileaks is going to leak who ordered for these accusations to surface more information about this emerges. Right now it's too soon to judge, pun intended, as always.

By the way, Amazon dropped Wikileaks due to political pressures.

Assange's lawyer, Mark Stephens, also repeatedly referred to the prosecuting lawyer as a "prosecutrix" as in the NYT updates, and that makes me wonder a bit about the integrity of his defense...

What type of priority are Interpol putting on this single case?

I don't know, but I think that'll give a good idea of how genuine it is.

It seems Assange was granted bail, but is kept in jail for at least 2 more days because there was an appeal to the judge's decision:
"An appeal will be held within the next 48 hours and you will remain in custody," the judge told Assange, who nodded and said, "I understand," before being led from the dock by security guards.

Is it just me, or is it that the instant that there is some civilian "enemy" of the state, all of a sudden, sex offense charges comes flowing in?
