"If you are familiar with the first law of thermodynamics, then you should be familiar with the second law. It says tells us that it is scientifically impossible for the universe to be eternal. Everything degenerates. Leave an apple on a table for a few weeks and it will rot. Leave a rock for a billions years and it will turn to dust. If the universe was eternal (trillions and trillions "plus" old) it would have turned to dust. So now you are back to the question as to what caused the universe in the beginning. If you say that there was no first cause (a Creator), then you are stuck with the unscientific and thoughtless belief that nothing created everything. So, what is it that you believe? Is it that Something created everything? Then you are not an atheist because you believe in a Creator. Or do you believe that nothing created it? There is no in-between."

the universe will turn to dust apparently.

The only thing this argument shows is that Ray Comfort does not understand the second law of thermodynamics

arg-fallbackName="ImprobableJoe"/>
Yeah, Comfort almost makes sense, until he spews his "nothing created everything" stupidity. Since no one is making that claim, he's just being an asshole.

arg-fallbackName="Whisperelmwood"/>
Considering the sheer amount of people who tried to tell him about reality on his blog, and the fact that he ignored every single one of them - I'd say, yeah, he's simply an asshole.

arg-fallbackName="zakkro"/>
Why is it that they only use science (albeit, strawmen of scientific concepts) when it confirms whatever pre-supposed belief they have (sorry to generalize)? Oh yeah, they're snakes...

I think you mean cunt..... shame he'll never know what one feels like...

By comfort's standards, this is actually quite good. He may very well be correct that the Universe will eventually end, but he's of course totally erroneous in assuming that it should have happened by now. I just love when the flaw in an argument is so obvious it unravels itself without any effort being made.

arg-fallbackName="buzzausa"/>
I have said it before: If anybody listens to what Comfort (and/or his girlfriend Cameron) says and actually goes "you know Ray...I see your point there", I truly believe we are devolving as a species.

arg-fallbackName="JBeukema"/>
Ray is a fool. The universe will not disappear, simply cease to be 'active'- IF it keeps expanding, experiences no 'Big Crush' and is not somehow effected by an unknown quantity

arg-fallbackName="AndromedasWake"/>
The 2nd law has nothing to do with an apple rotting, nor a rock eroding. It describes the maintenance or increase of unusable energy in a system. So really, he's off to a poor start with two false analogies and he hasn't even started to preach yet. He's pretty much the archetype tool.

I love to read about this shit but I'm no expert. I thought energy never 'died' just changed into a new form. Sorta like an explosion of fire also releases kinetic energy? Man I really need to pick up some more books on this topic...

Anyway, remember children. Science is always wrong and evil.... unless we think it can be used to support our beliefs!

think of a lump of coal after it's burned. it's all there, but it's not gonna do much of anything

coming from you, that's hilarious

You are correct. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed into other forms. That is the first law of thermodynamics. But the second one states that every time energy changes from one form to another, the total entropy in the system and surroudings (universe) will increase (sometimes remain constant, but never decrease, chemists say that entropy allways increase with spontane reactions). The entropy is a meassurement of the amount of disorder in the movement of the particles. And this disorder decides how much of the energy is usable for practical work. We call this energy quality. A high energy quality means the energy can easily be used for practical work, and a good example is electricity. A low energy quality means the energy is difficult to use for practical work, and the lowest quality energy we have is heat energy. Heat energy isn't really that usefull, and that is one of the reasons why fision reactors are so ineffective, the nuclear fission release a LOT of energy, but we can only harness it as heat energy, and so we have problems converting it into electricity (because then we need to convert low quality into high quality) so the effectivness of a nuclear power plant is often just a few percent.

To put it simple: Every time we use energy, a small part of it will turn into heat energy, which more or less can't be used for anything.

If you want to read more you can do the usual things: google, wikipedia. They are all good sources, but I also reccomend:
AndromedasWake own article on it from his website.

I found it quite good, and very easy to read.

nuclear= steam power

Look JB. I've been civel to you. Could you please return the favor? Name ONE instance when I have lied or promoted some crazy agenda.

All you have done is thrown insults, shoved so many words in my mouth I could probably swallow the moon at this point, taken every possible point so insanely out of context (my suggesting a child has just as much potential to be a prophet as a monster you instantly took me mean I think all children are monsters. NICE DEBATE TACTIC!!).

What. The. Fuck. Man.

I don't think you're crazy because you're pro life but you seem to think I'm a monster for being pro choice. You have not once answered any of my questions. Or behaved as anything but a raving lunatic. Even the other people who were pro life in that thread were distancing themselves from you.

What. The FUCK.

Now what? You're going to follow me around mocking my beliefs on everything? Find every chance to spit in my face because I don't happen to share your fucking opinion?

You do realize you sound exactly like a fundamentalist christian when you behave like this. Considering the forum you're on that boggles my mind further.

I don't lie to support agendas and it deeply deeply pisses me off and offends me to be called a liar. Worse yet you accuse me of horrible things and even suggest I should kill myself.

What kind of fucking god damned monster are you? AND WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU EVEN HERE?

I don't wish you'd die in a fire. I wish you could feel empathy. That's it. Just empathy. Words hurt. Remember the pen is mightier than the sword? You may be some anonymous fucktwat but I consider this place a haven. I don't leave my fucking house for days on end and this is one of the few ways I can socialize. SO STOP FUCKING IT UP AND GROW UP!!!!!

I'm going to go cry myself to sleep now.

Re: JBeukema

Hey Otokogoroshi,
I have a suggestion if you don't want to put up with JB's comments anymore. You can go to his profile (there's a small link at the bottom of each of his posts) and click on 'add foe' this will put him on your ignore list. It collapses each of his posts so you don't have to read them, but there is a button if you still want to read occasional posts. That's what I did anyway - and I feel much better.
