You seem to find it witty to use an archaic definition of "Atheist" whenever it suits you. Did you honestly mean when you said theists claim atheism is a new or has always been an unpopular idea, that they are actually arguing against deism. Really? If you believe that there is only one god then you are an atheist regards to other gods. Early christians were accused of being atheists because they rejected other gods and only believed in one.

It's really simple. You don't believe in existance of Zeus, therefore you take the position of an atheist regarding that particular god.

EDIT: Like you are not a husband (aka believe) of Eve, so you are not married (aka atheist) regarding to that particular woman. You are a husband (aka believe) of Karen, so you are married (aka theist) to that particular woman.

I personally point it out in context when some religious person says that being an atheist is illogical and stupid etc. I try to expose their double standard and make them think. I've seen many times a religious person making well thought critique against religion other than their own, but somehow they don't apply it in a same way to their own religion.

Many ardent theists appeal to theism as if it is one coherent concept when it is, in fact, a bunch of contradictory and mutually exclusive claims. Even adherents of the same religion hold so much vitriol and bile for members of the 'wrong' sect; it always amuses me when a Christian or a Muslim appeals to this myth - what about all those fellow theists that your sect murdered to prove who practiced the right form of religion?
