Exodus 13
21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by
night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22
Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of
the people.
Exodus 19
9 The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will
hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what
the people had said.12 Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not
approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to
death. 13 They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person
or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they
approach the mountain.”
16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the
mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. 17 Then Moses led the
people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount
Sinai was covered with smoke, because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up
from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. 19 As the sound of
the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.
20 The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So
Moses went up 21 and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force
their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish. 22 Even the priests, who approach the
Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”
Exodus 20
18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in
smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us
yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of
God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Exodus 24
15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord
settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the
Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked
like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up
the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
Deuteronomy 4
11 You came near and stood at the foot of the mountain while it blazed with fire to the very
heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness. 12 Then the Lord spoke to you out of the fire. You
heard the sound of words but saw no form; there was only a voice.
15 You saw no form of any kind the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire.
24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great
fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire.
Deuteronomy 5
4 The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. 5 (At that time I stood
between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid of the
fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:
6 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
22 These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there
on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing
more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
23 When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all
the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me. 24 And you said, “The Lord our God has
shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have
seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them. 25 But now, why should we die? This
great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.
26 For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have,
and survived? 27 Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the
Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.”
Deuteronomy 9
3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a
devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them
out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.
10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the
commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the
assembly.
15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two
tablets of the covenant were in my hands.
19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you.
But again the Lord listened to me. 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him,
but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf
(Golden Calf) you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder
as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.
Micah 1
3 Look! The Lord is coming from his dwelling place;
he comes down and treads on the heights of the earth.
4 The mountains melt beneath him
and the valleys split apart,
like wax before the fire,
like water rushing down a slope.
6 “Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble,
a place for planting vineyards.
I will pour her stones into the valley
and lay bare her foundations.
7 All her idols will be broken to pieces;
all her temple gifts will be burned with fire;
I will destroy all her images.
Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes,
