Ace of Spades (free game)

My brother introduced this to me a few days ago. Basically, think multiplayer Minecraft, only with worse graphics, guns and capture-the flag gameplay. Games are played on enormous maps and the pace is often quite slow, but it is a lot of fun. In fact, the slow pace actually appeals to me, since it lets me carry out ambushes and hit-and-run attacks.

It's completely free, but it's still in beta at the moment so it is still a bit buggy. I couldn't get on to any servers at all for a few days. Still not sure why, but it's cleared itself up now.

OMG what has the world become.
We went from this:

Not to be a bit dramatic, but I think we are totaly going in the wrong direction in terms of video games.

Personally I'll forego all those sumptuous graphics in favour of decent gameplay, and IMO decent gameplay has been conspicuous by it's absence in most recent game releases.

This. Though there are notable exceptions, a great deal of big-budget games pour money into graphics whilst almost completely neglecting innovation. Most shooter games at the moment, with a few notable exceptions, are clones of Call of Duty, just with a little quirk here or there to make them stand out in some way.
I would also go as far to say the same could be said of most RTS games-them being clones of the Command and Conquer series (itself based on Dune 2000). However, there are again some very notable exceptions (the Total War series, Sword of the Stars, Company of Heroes).

Many of the most fun games out there at the moment are indie games with shit graphics. Minecraft is the most visible example.

Total War FTW!

Small historical point: the first of the TW series was Shogun Total War, which was based upon the board game Shogun, which I have played since my youth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shogun_(1986_board_game)

So I guess if it's derivative of anything then it's Risk. But it's better than Risk IMO.

More than half my library is indie, but that's partly a price factor (due to steam sales with indie packs).'

But I just wanted to note I really really like Battlefield Bad Company 2...
