A day in the life of a closet-atheist.

I feel sorry for you. ;9. Don't take it to seriously and try to tolerate it.

"What do all these life forms have in common?"

Circuit overseer's wife's answer: "DNA, but try telling an evolutionist that. They think all DNA is different and that it evolves and that we have monkey brains *chuckle*. We really need to not get wrapped up in theories and philosophies... and evolutions."
...
Ill let you guys take care of that one.
As you wish... It's curious though, I would think the answer would be "god made them" given that it's a religious situation... That she answered DNA at all is pretty interesting and almost an implicit acceptance of science (just a major misunderstanding/ignorance (and failing to recognize it)).

Deoxyribonucleic acid (or DNA for short) is a nucleic acid (a molecule), with a specific structure that chains in a double helix. The outer helices are made of sugars and phosphates, to which one of four molecules can attach** (which we call bases). So if we ignore the helices (the backbone of the molecule, the scaffolding that holds the bases in place) we can think of DNA as a sequence of bases, of which there are four; this is why you often see DNA represented by a string of four characters (for example ATCGAATCCG). All organisms (that are not RNA based viruses) have DNA, but that DNA can (and does) have a sequence of different bases. DNA is united under one term because it all has the same underlying structure, but it is almost always different in the order (and length) of the sequence of base pairs.*** This is why you and I both have DNA, but my DNA is different from yours...

You might want to read the wikipedia page, because it's pretty good so far as i can tell. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/DNA

**it should be noted that molecules are atoms bonded together, so if you bond/attach two molecules together, they create one molecule.
***they are base pairs because of the double helix, which means that if one base is on one side of the double helix, a specific (different) base must be on the other side (otherwise the chemistry doesn't work out right).
P.S. I am not a biochemist and it's been years since I had to know this stuff cold, so it is not unlikely that I've made mistakes. It is likely someone will correct me... Hopefully I am making their job easier.

Burro, thanks, lol. I was more or less looking for witty comments about how her answer was a generic batshit insane creationist rambling. I know what DNA is, hehe. I just was trying to convey how stupid she is for saying something like that.

This is how Jehovah's Witnesses work. They like to use sciency words to give themselves a thin veneer of credibility. This is why I got curious but was never satisfied with what they offered me.

EDIT:
Here is a link to the Watchtower study in question. Codarob was talking about paragraph 12 on page 8. This is your basic apologetics material with all the fallacies creationists make. Nothing new.
