FINALLY!

Yes, it's rudimentary, and yes, it only works in Chrome and Safari 4+ and IE (with the Chrome Frame form Google). But it's here! Huzzah!

Now onward and upward to fixing the DMCA issues!

I opted into the beta, what improvements/differences should I expect to see?

Edit: Oh my god, everything is loading so fast. This is awesome.

So I take it that HTML5 is not on every video, but it's good when it is. Do you think it will be available on Firefox eventually?

I think that the 3.7 primal has ...kinda html5 support. It also needs i264 support ( wtf they're not using theora is beyond me ) I think that google is disabling it based on your user agent string, which would make some sense after all.

Mainly the gist of it is to get away from reliance on adobe flash, a garbage plugin that is the genesis of over 50% of all firefox crashes, saps performance, and *STILL* has no x64 support.

Can't say I understand any of that :(

Html5 has the video tag, which is clearly what youtube is using. Html5 will make many changes to the way you use the web.

right now to play video without html 5 you must embed a third party program into your browser, there are only really two such programs of note, one is microsoft's silverlight, and the other is adobe flash. Adobe flash is notoriously bad at supporting new technologies ( they just got hardware acceleration two months ago ) and notoriously worse at making things work without problems. Almost every time your browser crashes or closes unexpectedly, I'm confident it's because of adobe flash crashing.

There is an open source video compressor/decompressor called Theora that firefox already has full support for. Google isn't using this for whatever the hell reason. Even if they were using theora, they have the ability to know what browser you're using and shut features on and off accordingly.

so far, youtube and apple are pushing the inferior, and closed-source h.264 codec that itunes uses.

No kidding! Sweet fancy Jesus!

Here's hoping it can do that for Hulu too. Assuming we don't have to start paying for it...
