Far too much of my life was spent living in the Middle East where movies, especially Sci-Fi films, were either banned or censored with such a heavy hand that I eventually stopped bothering. The Matrix Revolutions was missing a good 45 minutes... something about Muhammad calling dibs on "The One" concept.

In my efforts to catch up I've already found a few gems; Moon being my favorite thus far, with Serenity and the Firefly series not far behind. I'm currently wading through the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica and have Children of Men and Primer in queue.

Anyway, as a fan of the genre and someone who is looking to expand his library, I'm curious what the members of these forums would recommend.

Tarkovsky is probably my favorite director. so "Stalker" is my thing

Well since you've already got Firefly I would recommend the Babylon 5 tv series. The first season is a little slow but it sets the scene for a magnificent story that spans seasons 2-4 before winding down in season 5. The invasion, I mean liberation, of Earth made for an excellent climax.

Here's a scene from my favourite episode "come the inquisitor" which shouldn't spoil too much.

As for movies, Blade Runner is a bit of a cult favourite.

Firefly and Farscape are my primary favs, but I'm really enjoying the new series Caprica.

I think SGU has some surprises coming up...

Besides what's already been recommended here, I'd suggest the Fifth Element. Not very hard sci-fi, but I liked it.

A million points go to NukedFromOrbit for Children of Men.

Since they havn't been mentioned, I'll go ahead and say Jurassic Park, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, and... can we mention books? I really want to say Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy even though the Hollywood movie was terrible (haven't seen the British version.)

Anyway, here's something that most of you probably haven't heard of. It's an a Japanese show called PlanetES. I'm not an Anime person, but it's just such a fantastic show and a great example of both good science and good fiction. Here's a trailer:

Like with most foreign films/shows, subtitles are the way to go. The English dub is terrible.

You must watch the BBC version, it's a little old now but side-splittingly funny in a way that the movie just couldn't manage.

if anyone likes semi good cheesy sci fi movies check out john carpenters "they live" other great ones i can think of that i watched recently are : Sphere, The day the earth stood still (not the remake) and dune. all great movies! klatu verata nicto ^_^

arg-fallbackName="tangoen"/>
if you want a good sci fi BOOK check out "The day of the triffids" by john wyndham my favorite it might remind you of the opening to 28 days later but that's all they have in common. i'll give one hint as to what it's about. it's about triffids ^_^ no really though 99% of the popluation goes blind it's honestly a really good apocoliptic sci fi story. they did make a movie but it's crap a remake would be a bestseller though

Star Warz hands down. And why? Because not only are lightsabers gods way of saying I love You, but who doesn't like Star Warz

Firefly/Serenity were awesome, but every time I watch them I just get pissed that it wasnt even given a chance to elaborate enough (like what was the deal with Shepherd?!?)

Futurama (although its more fi than sci)

Stargate, and the first show they made

thats most of what I can think of right now...

arg-fallbackName="I_Like_P1E"/>
Star wars (of coarse)
Never really got into star trek, but I do like star gate SG1.
Alien/Aliens
The Thing(newer version)
Pandorum

Those are just off the top of my head :p

Hey, I've seen that. Planetes is a decent, no-thoughts-required anime, but it gets a very mushy and Ai wouldn't just shut the fuck up.

This! The BBC minis are amazing, the casting is just so perfect. The jokes are classic. The rendition is awesome. The Britishness seeps off your screen and that's a good thing.
