I watched the movie a few days ago and am now just a little over halfway through the book and damn, are they different!
OK, spoilers will be heavy.
Now first of all, the Brad Pitt Character doesn't even remotely exist, does he? Neither does the lab, Pitt's boss, the base in Korea... Hell, the only similarity is Israel's wall and the zombie apocalypse. That's it. Oh and possibly their attraction to sound.
In the book, the ships all wait near islands (smart), in the movie they wait in the open sea. (Wtf?)
In the book, the most important countermeasures are the various doctrines, based on that one fellow from South Africa. In the movie, the most important countermeasure is Brad Pitt.
In the book, acts of savagery, heroism and desperation are explored. In the movie, a few people die but apart from that one family it's pretty much "meh", and apart from that one near-rape scene you don't see any human depravity.
In the book, the zombies are slow, it's once mentioned that you can outrun them by walking at a brisk pace. In the movie, the zombies are about twice as fast as a human.
In the book, different ways of surviving are explored, like building forts and building a war-economy. Some really clever schemes (like RKR or resource-to-kill ratio) are explored. In the movie, ... eh, why bother.
In the book, the war wages for years and it takes all of humanities efforts to vanquish the threat. In the movie, it can't have taken more than a few weeks.
I could go on, but what's the point? I enjoyed the movie, not having read the book, but damn does it look stupid after I read it. The book is excellent and I'll be sure to pick up a few points for future posts.
EDIT: In retrospect, this book would have been excellent for one of those movies where you have ten different main characters and you only see them for a few minutes while they tell their story, then you hop on to the next one...
