Which religion would you substitute Christianity for?

Think of a world where for some reason christianity didn't take, somehow the zombie mesiah wasn't up to the challenge and thus some other religion became the predominant religion in occident like say the greek gods, the roman patheon, the nordic gods, etc...

Which one of the other religions would you like to have been as influential as christianity became?

Which are the ramifications for culture, science, law, everyday living would it have?

Do you believ the world would be better of with this religion as a mayor religion?

Please don't say none, yes I believe that no religion would be best but let's have fun nerdspeculating a bit.

Me?

I think the greek gods would have been a blast, praying to different gods according to the situation, no sexual hangups, I dont know enough to know if the world would be a more cruel place since I don't know how the felt about the poor and dienfranchised, but slavery probably would have been abolished later (or sooner if the religion became weaker sooner), I believe thay were more egalitarian with their women, science and art were not anathema to the gods so research would be lauded and not despised.

Imagine the architecture, instead of having all churches be dedicated to the same asshole, having shrines to each of the gods, having priests of all gods conviene to discuss what each god wants or needs (although I belive the greeks were less arrogant when pretending to know what their gods wanted)

I believe that sucha a culture would have been a bit more receptive to tha whole "the gods are not that important" since it wasn't a single all powerfull god that demanded sacrifices, and thus more conductive to athe ism or probably since the gods would meddle less in every day living, atheists would have less to "rebel" against and society would be more religious but less fanatical about it.

Please understand that I know next to nothing about Greek gods (and it shows, I know) the point is not so much to be accurate but to imagine new possibilities, however if you feel upt to it I would actually love to know more about these gods.

Ok, your turn.

Best regards

Ed.

Is none an option?

(I don't think any religion, given as much power and influence as Christianity has had throughout western history would have done a better job at not being oppressive and genocidal, and yes I believe even Buddhism wouldn't have served us much better)

That's what I call The Had-Would-If+When-game.

The greek gods were a bunch of rowdies. Completely selfoccupied in their oversized soap opera to whom the humans were just tin soldiers.

We're already copying them without continuing their specific temple builds as we've developed our own versions.

Well - I guess there would have been even more wars over the time and this planet might not suffer so much under the domination of a single species today.

I like the Aboriginal world view.

I'd say the Norse Gods were pretty badass, but then again there's the whole fear of frost-giants and shizz...
Next I'd go for Judaism, mainly because they place such a great emphasis on education. On the other hand, there's the whole "genital mutilation" thing going on.
My third option would be Jainism. Non-violence, multiplicity of views... But it's also anti-scientific (the Universe has always been there and will always be there) and vegetarian. (I'd sorely miss my steaks.)
I guess the last option I can think of is Hinduism, but I don't know much about it. The Kāma sounds cool: "the aesthetic enjoyment of life, affection, or love." It spawned the Kama Sutra, after all...

All in all though, I'd be an atheist all over again.

I think that no matter which religion it'd be people would bend it to suit their needs. Some would use it to build a more compassionate and understanding society, others would use it to spread hate.

If I had to choose I'd choose something like paganism/animism where animals and plants would have spirits and people wouldn't be allowed to use more natural resources than they'd really need. Something that'd encourage people to learn about the world around them and above all, NOT TO LIE, especially if it was for protecting the religion.

do we get to execute people with wheat allergies for their heresy?

I feel executions of some randomly chosen group of others are an integral part of turning any religion into a worldwide phenomenon.

Also vegetarians/vegans/etc. (willing heretics who stray from the meatball), teetotallers (the beer volcano isn't there for laughs), and so on and so forth.

That being said, doesn't the first of the eight "I'd really rather you didn'ts" state:
I'd Really Rather You Didn't Act Like A Sanctimonious, Holier-Than-
Thou Ass When Describing My Noodly Goodness. If Some People Don't
Believe In Me, That's Okay. Really, I'm Not That Vain. Besides, This Isn't
About Them So Don't Change The Subject.

Plus the second one states:
I'd Really Rather You Didn't Use My Existence As A Means To Oppress,
Subjugate, Punish, Eviscerate, And/Or, You Know, Be Mean To
Others. I Don't Require Sacrifices And Purity Is For Drinking Water, Not
People.

Granted, these are tenets of the faith, however if the global reach of christianity teaches us anything it's that behavioural strictures are open to interpretation when it comes to converting the masses.
