The UN has said that the Vatican should "immediately remove" all clergy who are known or suspected child abusers.

The UN watchdog for children's rights denounced the Holy See for adopting policies which allowed priests to sexually abuse thousands of children.

In a report, it also criticised Vatican attitudes towards homosexuality, contraception and abortion.

The Vatican responded by saying it would examine the report - but also accused its authors of interference.

A group representing the victims of abuse by priests in the US welcomed the report.

In its findings, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) said the Holy See should open its files on members of the clergy who had "concealed their crimes" so that they could be held accountable by the authorities.

This will be a perfect opportunity to see if Pope Frances is actually the peoples Pope. He has been getting a lot of praise, which I think is highly undeserved. However, if he gives up those files and takes action against the pedophiles; now that would be praise worthy.

Firstly, the UN has no authority to ban a religion. Secondly, the UN adheres to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which freedom of religion is a core tenet, because unlike you, the UN isn't a stroppy teenager.

Not that I don't agree that there is really no need to ban either the Roman Catholic faith, or the Roman Catholic Church, at this moment (though in a better world a bushelfull of Catholic higherups, including Herr Ratzinger, would in prison for crimes against children) but I find the question of possibly banning a religion or a church interesting.
