Vaccines and autism

This has probably been discussed here before but now that Wakefield is still defending his claim, it might be interesting to bring it up again. The president of the National Autism Association, Wendy Fournier, still defends Wakefield's claim. She uses the same arguments as you all have heard before claiming that pharmaceutical companies are only interested in money, you can't question vaccines because the "system" will get you, more research needs to be done. She also claims to know Wakefield personally and that she could not believe that he would do something like this.

Now my questions are how can an organisation like the National Autism Association exist and not have a doctor who is specifically an expert in autism who knows enough of the scientific method to know that the paper was fraudulent and set the record straight for this association and is it also not a conflict of interest when the president of such an organisation is friends with the person who is being tried for performing invasive unnecessary medical tests on children and manipulating data like this? Wouldn't it be better if this interview was done by a doctor who is an expert on autism and a member of the association? What do you all think?

The video can be found here

Certainly. This might just be a fringe group. They don't have a wikipedia entry whereas these two do:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_Network_International
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_National_Committee

Their executive director is also anti-vaxx. I'd say it's just an organization of McCarthy-inspired nuts with an unassuming name.

Edit: this is also conveniently the most recent post on pharyngula: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2011/01/it_wasnt_just_shoddy_it_was_fr.php
A nice video of Wakefield too.

I think we're making him a martyr...

that would include having him dying painfully for his misdeeds wouldn't it? :D

what's the alternative? Ignoring the issue isn't an option and he just happens to be at the core of it.

Well, at least a non deadly martyr I would think.

This video starts out well enough with skeptics catching up with anti-vaccination spokes-model Jenny McCarthy and getting her stupefying response to the court decision against anti-vaccination promoter Andrew Wakefield. But how does she end up on the ground? Is this guerrilla skepticism run amok?

 Yeah  Well, maybe next time, interview the real Jenny. It was good but obviously fake.

Seeing as:
By 2001, Thimerosal was removed from most vaccines in North America and Europe. It was gradually replaced by other non mercury compounds, and some vaccines have been formulated so they don't need preservatives.

It's officially more dangerous to eat a Tuna sandwich

[I have to say as debunking goes, that was easy as shit]
