Hey guys, I'm looking to partition part of my hard drive off to linux, however I would like to know what linux package is best for beginners. See I'm still rather attached to my stolen corporate goodies like photoshop and adobe after affects, so naturally I must know; will I still be able to run these programs on linux? Now when I say run I mean run, not "well it will be slow as hell but you might get some progress out of it once in a while." I want to know if these programs will run just as well on linux as they do on windows vista.

Also I know there are many variations of linux, I need to know one that will be both sufficient for my computing needs (Video editing, piracy, youtube ya know basic shit everyone here is probably familiar with) but also easy enough for a n00b to understand.

If you need to know here are my computer specs

I have an HP DV4 laptop, 4 gigs or RAM, 64 bit AMD turion X2 ultra dual core mobile (long name WTF?) processor 2.1 ghz (I think), A 3200 ATI dedicated graphics card(I'm on a laptop here so that isn't bad), and a 400 gig hard drive.

Thanks in advance :D

I recently started using Ubuntu 9.04 on this laptop, using it right now in fact, I've booted back into Vista once since... I don't have photoshop on here so haven't tested it with Wine, but I have tried it with various bits of web coding tools and they run pretty well though I do get a couple of graphics glitches but I would put that down to my graphics chipset being considerably rubbish on this thing.

As with any laptop though, it might be hit and miss as to whether everything will work without some tweaking.

WINE is no longer an emulator, it's a proper embedded Windows environment so usually, Windows software should run at full speed. You just have to make sure that you have installed all the right dependences for the software you are installing, like one of the programs I have needed MSXML3 installing using Winetricks.

Out of the box, it just worked, I haven't had to install one single driver.

On another note:

A polite warning. From what I can gather you have mentioned two instances of illegal activities in your post. This is against the forum rules and I'd appreciate you refrain from discussing such matters on these boards. Not only does LoR not wish to be related to illegal activity, it can also land us in trouble with the hosting providers, not to mention incriminating yourself.

There are Alternatives to Photoshop, like The GIMP and/or krita.
Aftereffects is a lil bit iffy, you can try Cinelerra and/or kdenlive and/or Pitivi....

I would advice you to look at WINE:s AppDB if you want to run windows software...
