The OFFICIAL Heavy Metal discussion thread

I listen to a broard spectrum of music, but I feel that death metal is by far my favourite, it's mentally stimulating, and great fun for me to play.

To say tech death/metal has no soul is absurd. just because it does not convey emotions to you personally, does not mean that it is completely void of any soul. By its own definition it's an overly technical genre, which I personally find extremely satisfying to bathe my eardrums in!

What is a good song to your ears, is a headache to others and vice-versa... so I wouldn't go as far as to say a lot of metal bands are useless at writing songs, it's just their approach when creating music - I personally pefer to write a song like a story, as in no verse/chorus structure, but that doesn't mean the music will not flow well or be inferior in any way to what you believe is a "good song", even if it is a 20 minute solo.

It's all down to personal preference, I'm glad that my tastes are wide and varied, it means I can appreciate so much more and always discover something new and exciting... I feel sorry for anyone who won't listen to a genre simply because they feel a certain way of singing is redundant, or it's too technical.

That said, I missed the Nile show in London... feel so gutted that I missed it, but I do have their latest album, so I guess it's not a complete loss!

Roaaargh, grrrrr and all the rest.

hello everyone, i read on page 2 about no one really sings in metal anymore, and i don't know how to do that quote thing so i hope they read this, one of my fav musicians is devin townsend, unbelievable voice, let alone songwriter
any devin fans in here?
if not, check out the following (i'll give a description as his sound varies and is in several bands)

devin townsend- metal/prog/melodic as hell in some songs, mainly clean vocals
devin townsend band- mainly more melodic, still some heavy stuff thrown in for good measure, mainly clean vocals
strapping young lad- uber heavy with some melodic thrown in for good measure, hmmm 50 50 between clean and scream

he's in a few other bands as well but seeing as this is a metal forum, i won't mention them

Some of my favorites incorporate both singing and growling. Adds way more diversity and dimension to things, when done properly.

Metal has changed a lot in the decades. I'm not concerned about the direction things are going in though, there's way too much new stuff that I like for that.

All of metal is dead now... The only good days were 1980 - 1995. From there on it's just a parade of commercialized filth claiming to be metal.

I'm really sick of this closed minded, self righteous view that the only "real" metal is some old, poorly produced genre defining band that people wear (a little too proudly) as tattoo's or T-shirts and use it to prove how much more "metal" and "bad ass" they are.

Metal is more than just Metallica, Pantera, and the extremes (death/black metal). Although don't get me wrong, they are great, nut it is insanely childish and ignorant to the way you portray your view on what is and is not metal. Also insulting people for their musical tastes is pathetic.

Rant off/Topic on
I'm a fan of almost anything with the word "core" or "metal" in it's genre/sub-genre... ATM I'm a Grindcore/Deathcore junky who loves the Hardcore, Black Metal, Thrash Metal and Death Metal on the side.

Thy Art is Murder - the best
(new) Dr. Acula - 420 awwww yeah
All Shall Perish
Nasum
Pig Destroyer
Napalm Death
Converge
(new)The Red Shore
Nile
Elysia
Cult of Luna
Emperor
Behemoth
(new) Remembering Never

I could probably go on for a LONG time with this list, but yeah.

Recorded, it's pretty cool already.. live,... it's fucking awesome. I really should go to Wacken this year. Damnit.

Oh and this

is a perfect intro.

I don't like anything with "core" in the name. That being said, Exodus, Slayer, Kreator, Children of Bodom, Mastodon, and Toxic Holocaust are all amazing. I'd say Dream Theater, but they're too prog-ish most of the time.

I used to adhere to that mindset just a couple years ago when I was about 16-17, and I've come to realize just how inane it really is. I wouldn't give a band a chance at all if it fell under a -core subgenre or if it was considered "commercialized," and I used to get into arguments over it on other forums.

There really is nothing to gain from music elitism. All it does is limit what you allow yourself to enjoy, when you should just listen to something out of enjoyment rather than how it's stratified within its main genre, or whether or not it involves breakdowns, or dumb superficial shit like that.

This thread is relevant to my interests, so I shall hoist it back into some semblance of life.

I am an ex metal elitist.

For YEARS I used to express that metal was the only genre worth listening to, specifically the many sub-genres of extreme metal, while secretly having a smattering of non-metal music in my collection.

Now when people ask me what I listen to, I simply say "whatever I think sounds good". When someone brings up a band I don't like, I don't berrate them about "selling out" or being "mainstream" as I would have as a teen and early adult, I instead just say "To my ear, they sound like shit, but whatever floats your boat."

I am still primarily a metal head, but I also like selective hip hop, some electronic music and I LOVE classical music.

I think extreme metal is woefully under-appreciated by the music world as a whole. Underneath the growling and distortion is some VERY complex and well written music that is on par, if not exceeding, some classical masters of old. Some of these guys are musical messiahs who are completely unknown.

You look in a Drummer magazine and you see the same 3 names repeated over and over again while guys like Flo Mounier, probably one of the fastest and most technically proficient drummers on earth, are unknowns.

Look in a Guitar World issue and you'll see guys heralded as "top 50 guitarists of all time" who are talentless hacks in the face of just your average tech death metal guitarist.

Who here has honestly heard of Dave Suzuki of Vital Remains? The guy can shred, play classical guitar AND play drums at pro levels but because he happens to play technical death metal guys like the dude from Creed will go down as one of the best guitarists of our generation when I could name 100 bands with more technically proficient axeman.

I think it's this fact that makes metal elitists. Our musical genre of choice is so marginalized that we feel the need to over compensate for it. I may have learned better now, but I still get my panties in a twist when I hear someone name a random pop-rock guitarist as being "amazing" or seeing the drummer from Blink 182 being called one of the best drummers of all time... HIS KIT HAS LIKE 4 DRUMS!

arg-fallbackName="Unwardil"/>
Can't let that drum thing slide.

Max Roach can (could) blow your mind with just a snare drum. The number of drums in your kit is irrelevant to what you can do with them. A drum kit, in it's purest essence is a snare, a high hat and a bass drum.

That being said of course, Travis is no paragon of drumliness by any stretch of the imagination.

Also, to add to the thread, Apparently Mike Portnoy is leaving Dream Theater, says the official DT web site. (Yeah, they're prog, not heavy metal, but it still falls broadly under the umbrella I think) I won't know how I feel about this news until I hear the guy they get to replace him, or until I see what he does afterward. I love his playing... When he's doing it in the context of dream theater playing dream theater repertoire and find him pretty forgettable outside of that.

Source, btw...

You're right, after I wrote that I thought about how many really good drummers I've seen with very basic kits, but I find Barker to be a perfect example of a musician who is talented but heralded as some kind of prodigy of music skill when I personally know drummers who are more skilled who aren't even in signed bands.

I heard about Portnoy, he apparently joined some band called Avenged Seven Fold whom, after listening to one song, don't deserve Portnoy behind the kit but if he wants to do it I guess he's earned the prestige.
