It still is dominated by a handful of bands. The hundreds you are talking about are the people who think that having a guitar and depressing lyrics makes you an artist.

And I do think they could have, but luckily for the people back then, they didn't.
And Metal isn't strong now, it doesn't mean anything. It used to mean rebellion, now it's just about who rigs more Grammies.

ok, I'll not bother trying to explain why you're wrong because you're quite obviously a cunt

All of metal is dead now... The only good days were 1980 - 1995. From there on it's just a parade of commercialized filth claiming to be metal.

Wow...

Seriously?

I mean, that's taking every album Dimmu Borgir has made after For All Tid and dismissing it as "just a parade of commercialized filth claiming to be metal". Some maybe, but all of it?

When I saw the thread title I thought this would be an awesome thread. I think it's just going to consist of this guy shooting down anyone that dares name a metal band that isn't one of his personal favourite oldschool metal bands.

You seem like the sort who would get all bent out of shape as soon as someone has different taste in music than you. Am I wrong?

Why doesn't anyone ever pay attention to other sub-genres? What about symphonic, combining both metal and classical? Or gothic, with its 'Beauty and the beast' style vocals?

If anything, they are the most creative and walk the line closest of all (I mean both metal & classical, neither are very mainstream in this day and age).

Used to be into metal, but then again I used to believe that there was a god...

I much prefer indie and progressive rock these days

Have to admit I do prefer oldschool metal to the newer bands but they best bands are always changing with the times so the CD's don't sound the same.

There is alot of great metal today... Or let me rephrase that, there is alot of great metal in metals sub-genres. Classic metal/heavy metal is dead and imo never was any good. Sure bands like Iron Maiden inspired alot of the bands I listen to but I still cant stand Iron Maiden. Im thankfull for everything the "oldschool" bands did for metal music but I never liked it.

I play in (Several) Black Metal Bands, the reason everyone thinks it is dead is because it's a more underground genre than most others, a lot of the lyrics and image stop any bands other than the big few being approached by major labels and the labels that do sign them don't have as much money so concentrate on the people they know are interested rather than full page spreads in large metal magazines that cost a fortune to do in the vague hope that more people seeing it means more people buying it.

I miss singing in metal. You know, varied octave ranges, over the top highs, etc... Now it seems like metal bands are afraid of appearing weak if they sing like that. Anyone can growl into a microphone and sound like cookie monster. Plus what is the point of watching a band if you can't understand a thing they say? Unless it's say for example Fantomas or Rammstein. However, Fantomas uses vocal effects not words and Rammstein, although it is in a different language, you can still decipher enunciation.

Every time I go watch a live local show, all the bands are trying to be harder, scarier, and more angry than the other and I can't pick out a single word they bark. It makes it hard for our band to get a gig because we're not pissed off enough. I don't care how much of a tortured soul you are (probably because It doesn't apply to me), I came for the sex, drugs, and rock,n,roll.

Have some Arcturus, I love that singer.

But yeah, I agree wholeheartedly, I think there is too much close mindedness in Metal as a whole in regards to singing, I personally prefer a mix of growl, scream and singing.

Though I do hate bands that have singers whose voice just sounds whiny and like your average emo singer.

*Shudder*

I've met intelligent people who aren't metalheads.

But this is a band I used to play guitar in:

What a bunch of bullshit. Growling is not just sounding like the cookie monster. Just look at the singer from Opeth (Mikael Ã…kerfeld) I can hear almost every word he sings/growls so dont be a retard and put all growlers in the same category.

It doesn't matter who it is, and I say this as a metal enthusiast of all types, but when singers growl into the microphone, no matter how good or bad their singing may be, they sound like the fucking cookie monster bro. I played in a metal band when I was back in high school and to be honest we kinda sounded like your band. Which should tell you something about the direction of metal these days. I mean its kinda like when hair metal bombarded the metal scene in the 80's. Its like you cant escaped this paradox of bad makeup and over excessive alcoholism. Maybe it just comes with the territory of being in a metal band.

The other thing is that a lot of these newer metal bands, NOT ALL, but a lot of them don't know how to write a good song anymore. Personally I think this comes from a lack of classical training in theory and what not. My dad was my guitar teacher and I grew up with really strict training on the guitar and the piano so I can understand if you feel my opinions are biased. Oh well....

Then on the flip side you got bands that do nothing but solo for fucking 20 minutes at a time and show off. I mean I believe in giving people what they paid for but I mean after a while, all the solos (or incessant noodling as I like to call it) , and all the barking into the microphone gets redundant and begins to sound the same. And please, don't get started with the argument like "Oh, what are you talking about? A lot of these metal musicians derive what they play from classical music." BLOW ME! Listen, I think it's great that these guys want to incorporate some sort of classical technique into their playing but you know what? It's got no fucking SOUL! And thats what you need to make a good song, much less a good guitar solo. One of my favorite guitarists that I love to listen to said something that I'll never forget about writing guitar solos and incorporating them into music that I write. He said:

"A guitar solo should take you and every listener somewhere on a journey just like the song is meant to do. Not to show off, or impress others but because it's the musical adaptation of how you feel. It's not meant to nail people on a fucking wall!"

Personally, I think that there is a very distinct difference in being a guitarist/bassist or drummer as opposed to being a musician. This doesn't mean you have to play more than one instrument to be a musician, it just means that there has to be some sort of mutual appreciation for other types of music , even if you don't like to listen to other types of music it or play them. Furthermore I think that a good musician should be able to take everything, all the good the bad and the ugly and turn it into something that is his own.

Anyways, before I end this rant, I just want to say, Guitarists, sweep arpaggios are a cheap ass fucking trick. And vocalists don't try to mask what ya can't flaunt by turning into the cookie monster

(End Rant)

I am not anti growling, I just think there is a time and a place for it. Our bass player is very proficient at screaming death metal and we fit it in often as backup vocals. Just all the time gets a little monotonous.

I agree. The best examples I can use are the guitarists from KISS.

Ace Frehley: Minimal talent and uneducated musically, yet his solos flow like butter through the songs. (self destructive)
Vinnie Vincent: A little more flash and noodle, but his solos do take you on that adventure without realizing it. (self hating)
Mark St.John: Incessant noodler and full of himself, not even his band mates could handle his 20 min bee hive of a guitar. (egocentric)
Bruce Kulick: The "I got too much talent and don't know it" shy guy. Same as #2 (timid)

It seems the ones who are completely into themselves are the ones who need to show off. Yet the troubled artists seem to make the best solos.
I admire Kirk Hammett very much but, even some of his solos turn into an annoying noodle session.

BTW, who let this thread drop from #1?

Post Number 1 in the League of Reason is about metal. Not a bad start!

Nile just released an amazing album, and they may overtake Behemoth as my favorite band. I wanted to like Evangelion a lot more than I did, granted I found the first 2 tracks to be pretty phenomenal but it was no Demigod.

Outside of that I recently got into the band Shining which I suggest you guys check out,
