What do you think is the best musical representation for evolution, the Big Bang or even quantum mechanics?
Personally, I think that Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians comes closest to nailing evolution in musical form. I'd say it's my favourite piece of music ever. It is an hour long and is based on a consistent repeating pulse that is elaborated upon throughout the piece. It's a polarising piece of music, and I have heard it described both as "like Chinese water torture" and "like a beautiful Persian rug". Check it out - I'd especially recommend the version recorded by Ensemble Modern.
Otherwise, I've always found Autechre's music to remind me of the beauty and counter-intuitiveness of Quantum Mechanics.
Anyway, I;d be interested to hear what suggestions other people have for musical representations of natural phenomena.
Cheers!
