Critics who engineered the recent ouster of State Board of Education Chairman Don McLeroy, in part because of his strong religious beliefs, could end up with someone even more outspoken in her faith. Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond, who advocated more Christianity in the public square last year with the publication of her book, One Nation Under God, is among those that Gov. Rick Perry is considering to lead the State Board of Education, some of her colleagues say.

In a book published last year, Dunbar argued the country's founding fathers created "an emphatically Christian government" and that government should be guided by a "biblical litmus test." She endorses a belief system that requires "any person desiring to govern have a sincere knowledge and appreciation for the Word of God in order to rightly govern."

Also in the book, she calls public education a "subtly deceptive tool of perversion."

The establishment of public schools is unconstitutional and even "tyrannical," she wrote, because it threatens the authority of families, granted by God through Scripture, to direct the instruction of their children.

Dunbar home-schooled her own children.

Whoever Perry selects will fill the duration of McLeroy's term and continue to lead the board until another gubernatorial appointment in 2011.

Now excuse me while I go vomit.

Holy crap! Well if Texas secedes (which they can't actually do...) then it's not really America's problem any more, but shit that would suck if she took over.

I've got an idea, let Texas set up it's own little theocracy then we can send all the Hovinoids and Hamites there and maybe they'll leave the rest of us alone.

Actually it doesn't affect me, I'm from the UK, but I'm concerned for those who may have to grow up with a religious and sub-par education system. Obviously the appointment of a person is not an issue, it's what they do, so if they wanted to push creationism (or any of its identical twins) could that be taken to the supreme courts?

It would most assuredly be taken to the Supreme Court.

Still, the most important concern for Texans is, given her generally anti-public-schooling bias, is she going to further nerf Texas public schools?

Because I would not be down with that. I don't even live in Texas - but they do migrate from there to everywhere else.

publication of her book, One Nation Under God,
That must be one painful read if even the title is wrong. This sort of know-nothingness is so easy to dismiss until they actually get into a position that can affect other people.

I mean come on, she's anti-public school and she wants to run the state board of education what kind of moron would even vote for her?

I agree. Thinking about this about the things she's saying goes above and beyond defining the word "hypocrite". A pass at this is one thing, but her succeeding at this is an entirely new and and exponentially more dangerous thing. And then there's wondering how skewed her views are, and to what degree. She may just find it dandy to omit those subjects useful in school to those growing up. I'm imagining schools just becoming churches in that right.

And then we go to the videos.

<3 Genie.

Seriously, She's not biased at all.

Seriously,

Video made November 11th, 2008.

To top it off.

Edited due to sucking at code.

it really seems odd to me that a woman who is vocally Anti public school, and homeschools her own children is even in consideration for the position.

I am shouldn't the people on the board of education have some actual desire to see the public school system get better?

That's what I thought, but then I remembered that she comes from the party that wants to govern us with the mantra, "Government Is Evil".

BTW, folks, I live in Texas. Please don't abandon us to the morons!

Fuck. My 7 year old daughter lives and goes to school in Texas. If this insane woman has any say in my kid's education then I might seriously consider private schooling. Fuck Dunbar and her anti-education views. What a moron.

Ya'see, I keep doing that and all I get is a blank space. It's like a big middle finger from the forum.

Oh, wait. Quoting this has helped. Thanks.

GETTING BACK ON TOPIC

It was pointed out by AronRa that there were people gunning for the schoolboard job that were very pro-creationist shortly before the election.. That's what one of the videos were about. Perhaps this one can be nipped in the bud?

Does anyone else notice the startling and unnerving trend of religious conservatives bashing education and vilifying those with college degrees? No longer are you "a college graduate" but now you are "an elitist." This whole anti-education agenda the far right pushes has absolutely got to stop. You know what other nations vilify secular public education? The ones that are the poorest and most unstable. I hope they secede, then they can become a 3rd world country just like the rest of the religiously fundamentalist countries in the world. If Texas wants to radicalize its children so be it, I just hope they're ready for the consequences later one when all of those uneducated religious fundamentalists cause the state's finances to nose-dive and racism and sexism are reintroduced back into their everyday society. Oh yeah, fundamentalism is the real utopia, riiiiiiiiiiight...

I can't see this as anything but good news. The last school board director was ousted because people are getting sicker and sicker of their particular brand of dominionist fundie bullshit being shoved down their throats. So instead of lying low they want to promote someone who is even worse? This is the same positive feed-back loop that helped get the Bushites out of office.

Besides, as long as the Atheist Community of Austin exists, Texas can never be a lost cause.

arg-fallbackName="Vekin"/>
I no longer know how to help my state.

I wonder if AronRa will have any ideas...

That's what they said about Bush....

Never underestimate the power of stupid.

What? Ooohoo!

I''m studying to become a teacher in geography, and if I ever stumbles across a person like that... I might snap.

Homeschool...
