Does anyone know of any music pieces that sound truly epic? I find that for the most part, such pieces tend to be Classical (as in played with conventional instruments) but there are some exceptions.
Here's a few to start off:

Anything by Ronnie James Dio

He was 60-years old when he made this. How intense is that?

As for my anime contribution:

I think these two are pretty much untouchable though

It is a very good song, and is no worse for being (dun dun derrr) the Lord's Prayer sung in Swahili :) ("Baba Yetu" translates roughly as "Our Father Jesus").

Also, here's a super ultra mega epic tune I forgot when writing the OP:

Yeah I know. I also bloody love the hallelujah chorus by Handel. Good music is good music. :)

Hans Zimmer is definitely my favourite soundtrack composer. Gladiator and Inception have already been mentioned, I'll add two more:

This is Thunderbird (from Thelma & Louise), played live. I was actually in the audience when they recorded this:

And this is Journey to the line (from The Thin Red Line), from the same concert:

As for rock music, nothing beats Pink Floyd/David Gilmour: Comfortably Numb, Echoes, Dogs, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Sorrow, High Hopes, On the Turning Away, Welcome to the Machine, Murder, Fat Old Sun, ...

I'm being introduced to new music left right and centre here... Here's two found whilst following up videos put here by other posters so far, plus one from Avatar:

NOTE: for this one, listen from about 2:30 in. Otherwise it's fairly dull, as often happens in movie soundtracks:
