I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to songs with something real to say.

Here's my first pick, pay attention to the lyrics:

You just stood there screaming
Fearing no one was listening to you
They say the empty can rattles the most
The sound of your own voice must soothe you
Hearing only what you want to hear
And knowing only what you've heard
You, you're smothered in tragedy
And you're out to save the world

Misery
You insist that the weight of the world
Should be on your shoulders
Misery
There's much more to life than what you see
My friend of misery

You still stood there screaming
No one caring about these words you tell
My friend, before your voice is gone
One man's fun is another's hell
These times are sent to try men's souls
But something's wrong with all you see
You, you'll take it on all yourself
Remember, misery loves company

Misery
You insist that the weight of the world
Should be on your shoulders
Misery
There's much more to life than what you see
My friend of misery

You just stood there screaming
My friend of misery

[centre]The Butcher's Tale (western Front 1914)

[/centre]

The Zombies said:
[centre]A butcher yes that was my trade
But the King's shilling is now my fee
A butcher I may as well have stayed
For the slaughter that I see

And the preacher in his pulpit
Sermon: "Go and fight, do what is right"
But he don't have to hear these guns
And I'll bet he sleeps at night

And I
And I can't stop shaking
My hands won't stop shaking
My arms won't stop shaking
My mind won't stop shaking
I want to go home
Please let me go home
Go home

And I have seen a friend of mine
Hang on the wire like some rag toy
Then in the heat the flies come down
And cover up the boy

And the flies come down in Gommecourt, Thiepval,
Mametz Wood, and French Verdun
If the preacher he could see those flies
Wouldn't preach for the sound of guns

And I
And I can't stop shaking
My hands won't stop shaking
My arms won't stop shaking
My mind won't stop shaking
I want to go home
Please let me go home
Go home[/centre]

Wave Goodbye - Chris Cornell

Words get tangled on your tongue
And you stumble on your feet
When you miss somebody,
And everywhere you think you see them
Walking down the street
When you miss somebody,

When you miss somebody
You tell yourself a hundred thousand times
Nobody ever lives forever
So you give it one more try
To wave goodbye, wave goodbye,

Every hurtful thing you ever said
Is ringing in your ear
When you miss somebody,
And everything of beauty that you see
Only brings a tear
When you miss somebody,

When you miss somebody
You tell yourself everything will be alright
Try to stand up strong and brave
When all you want to do is lay down and die,

How long I've waited for an answer or a sign
Lonely and weary from
The troubled task of trying
To wave goodbye,

So now you start to recognize
That every single path you see
Leads to a tear in your eye
So wave goodbye, wave goodbye,

Hm, I have lots!

This is the one in my signature (second verse):

[showmore=One of My Lies Lyrics]When I was younger I thought the world circled around me
But in time I realized I was wrong
My immortal thoughts turned into just dreams of a dead future
It was a tragic case of my reality

Do you think you're indestructible
And no one can touch you
Well I think you're disposable
And it's time you knew the truth...

'Cause it's just one of my lies!
Well, it's just one of my lies
And all I wanted to was get real high
Well, it's just one of my lies

Why does my life have to be so small?
Yet death is forever
And does forever have a life to call its own?
Don't give me an answer 'cause you
Only know as much as I know
Unless you're been there once
Well I hardly think so

Do you think you're indestructible
And no one can touch you
Well I think you're disposable
And it's time you knew the truth...

'Cause it's just one of my lies!
Well, it's just one of my lies
And all I wanted to was get real high
Well, it's just one of my lies

I used to pray all night
Before I lay myself down
My mother said it was right
Her mother said it too...
Why?[/showmore]

[showmore=Missionary Lyrics]I start it, I end it, I kill and words defend it
Got big plans, blood stained hands
Wanna see my name on the map

On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world

Got a brand new set of words, and the going rate is cheap
Unconditional devotion, unquestioning belief
Words carved in stone, chiseled in with sharpened bones
Of the ones who thought my righteousness was something to oppose

I start it, I end it, I kill and words defend it
Got big plans, blood stained hands
Wanna see my name on the map

On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world

MISSIONARY!!!!!!

Can you see the flag rising up behind the smoke
Of dying authors burning books, was a problem what they wrote
The flag is hard to read cause all flags look the same
Covered with the blood of the faithless and insane

I start it, I end it, I kill and words defend it
Got big plans, blood stained hands
Wanna see my name on the map

On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world

My world, my world

On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world

Man of many names, but the motivation stays the same
My actions are a means to the end
My actions are a means to the end

On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world
On my way to save the world[/showmore]

[showmore=Leaving Jesusland Lyrics]We call the heartland not very smartland, IQ's are very low but threat levels are high
They got a mandate, they don't want man-dates, they got so many hates and people to despise

In the dust bowl, cerebral black hole, the average weight is well over 200 pounds
I hate to generalize, but have you seen the thighs, most haven't seen their genitalia in a while

Maybe that's why they're so pissed at us
They're all jealous we're having better sex

Queers, transgends, and lesbians, vegans and vegetarians
All you brownish red and yellow ones come out and join us on the coast

No longer svelte, they gotta punch new holes in the Bible belt
They've blown out the fire under the melting pot, the red blood of America is starting to clot
No compromise, no sight thru others' eyes, they're just flies spreading pieces of shit
You gotta emigrate, stop living in hate, what makes this country great is dwelling on either side

They don't want visitors in Jesusland
They want life bland and canned in the fatherland

We want people with college degrees, drug use experience and STD's
People with open-minded philosophies, come hug California trees
Cultural revolution now, neo-conservatives run outta town
We're gonna burn Orange County down,
And then we're off to Riverside, Bakersfield and Fresno too, then we're comin' after you

The fear stricken, born again Christian, they got a vision a homogenized state
Texas textbooks, Bibles, and prayer books,
They want them memorized, but don't want you to think

They don't want visitors in Jesusland
They want life bland and canned in the fatherland

Punk Rockers and emo kids, people doin' things the church forbids
Buddhists, agnostics, and atheists we're moving out of jesusland
Art students and thespians, (excluding country) all the musicians
We want all hookers and comedians, nihilists are welcome too

No longer svelte, they gotta punch new holes in the Bible belt[/showmore]

Though I don't typically like to repeat sources on lists like this, Green Day is too good not to.

[showmore=East Jesus Nowhere Lyrics]Raise your hands now to testify
Your confession will be crucified
You're a sacrificial suicide
Like a dog that's been sodomized
Stand Up! All the white boys
Sit Down! And the black girls
Stand Up! You're the soldiers
Sit Down! Of the new world

Put your faith in a miracle
And it's non-denominational
Join the choir we will be singing
In the church of wishful thinking

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Oh, bless me Lord for I have sinned
It's been a lifetime since I last confessed
I threw my crutches in "The river of a shadow of doubt"
And I'll be dressed up in my Sunday best

Say a prayer for the family
Drop a coin for humanity
Ain't this uniform so flattering?
I never asked you a god damn thing

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the faith fanatics

Don't test me
Second guess me
Protest me
You will disappear

I want to know who's allowed to breed
All the dogs who never learned to read
Missionary politicians
And the cops of a new religion

A fire burns today
Of blasphemy and genocide
The sirens of decay
Will infiltrate the inside[/showmore]

[showmore=The Trees Lyrics]There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas

The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'Oppression!'
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw[/showmore]

I can't find the song, but here's the lyrics:

Roy Harper - The Black Cloud of Islam

I'm sick to the teeth of the news on the screen
Of hisbullah scum and jihad the obscene
Whose men plant the bombs and then live feeling free
To watch women and children be killed on T.V.
Which satan delivers a child a death curse
In the name of a worn out collection of verse
I've not read the book so I cannot recite
But I'd bet Salman Rushdie is just about right
Underneath the black cloud of islam
What kind of publicity needs so much blood
That's not for some sad diablical god
Selling himself as a two-bit Macbeth
As the expect in sentencing cousins to death
And what kind of god can this be anyway
That you have to prostrate to him five times a day
With hate in your heart and a gun in your hand
Is force the only thing to understand
Underneath the black cloud of islam?
And the butchers who've got all this blood on their hands
Are the ones who need god to be stood where he stands
Blessing this kidnapping, murder and war
With books written hundreds of ages before
And woman in veils walking paces behind
Doesn't sit easy in my mind
It speaks of oppression and no other choice
That rigid compliance with the loudest voice
Underneath the black cloud of islam
You can put a lead bullet clean through this guitar
'cos I'm not overjoyed with the story so far
Sharing a world with the nutters of god
Is as good as being six feet under the sod
Words that are written are all here to say
And these are the latest there are anyway
And I am the prophet so don't believe me
I'm the same as the old ones expect that I'm free
To give you a piece of my mind which is this
You're the worst of jehovas blind witlessnesses
With your feet in the door of the deepest abyss
Which is underneath the black cloud of islam

Why do I always forget about this thread?

Protest Song

All the prophets of doom
Can always find room
In a world full of worry and fear
Tip cigarettes
And chemistry sets
And Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer
So I'm goin' back
To my little ol' shack
And drink me a bottle of wine
That was mis en bouteille
Before my birthday
And have me a ******' good time

Rain on a tin roof sounds like a drum
We're marchin' for freedom today ...hey
Turn on your headlights and sound your horn
If people get in the way

Let me turn you on
To the chromium swan
On the the nose of a long limousine
Even hired for the day
It is somethin' to say
But what the hell does it mean?
I may be accused
Of bein' confused
But I'm average weight for my height
My phil-o-so-phy
Like color TV
Is all there in black and white

RAI ..Rain on a tin roof sounds like a drum
We're marchin' for freedom today ...hey
Turn on your headlights and sound your horn
If people get in the way

In my opinion the greatest lyrics ever written:

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born is busy dying

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover that you'd just be one more
Person crying

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it

Advertising signs they con
You into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks they really found you

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something they invest in

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed
Graveyards, false gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only

Just a small snippet:

So affections fade away,
or do adults just learn to play
the most ridiculous repulsive games?
all our favorite ruddy sons
and their double-barreled guns,
you'd better hurry rabbit,
run, run, run.
'Cause mincing you is fun,
and there's a lot of hungry hatters
in this world set on taking it over.
But brittle thorny stems,
they break before they bend,
and neither one of us is one of them
