So I just got back from the doctor...

For the past few days I've had an absolutely God awful sore throat and a mild fever, so today I went into the doctor to get checked for strep. The doc did a rapid strep test and it came back negative. He told me that false negatives are not unheard of, yet even though my throat looked pretty bad, there were not red spots on the roof of my mouth and my fever had broken, which isn't charictaristic of strep throat, so the negative was probably correct.

He gave me antibiotics anyways to kill whatever bug is messing with me. My question is, does anybody know of other bacteria that cause really bad sore throats (pus on the tonsils, can barely eat because of the pain, etc)? I can't find any info on other bugs that cause those sympotms.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, but I do hope you feel better soon. All the best

When I go to the doc with similar things, they usually do a quick bloodtest to determine if it's bacterial or viral. Did your doc do that?

Your symptoms sound like something a virus could do, and there's plenty of those to choose from (just the umbrella term "cold virus" has OVER 200!!!!!!! ... ahem).

... and if it is a virus, the antibiotics will not help, obviously.

No bloodtests were done. I doubt it's a virus because viruses don't tend to leave pus on the tonsils, which is what I'm seeing.

Greetings,

Both viruses and bacteria can cause infections of the tonsils.

The most likely cause, however, is tonsilitis.

Kindest regards,

James

Ah, well, perhaps not... just seems a little hasty of the doc to just throw antibiotics at you.

But that's what we're hearing from around the place, so...

Well, whatever it is, it's been 24 hours since my first dose and the pus and pain are gone. So I'm thinking it was some sort of bacteria.

I had a similar sore throat around when the whole Bernhard thread was wrapping up, but never got it treated. I think it just went dormant an came back. The only difference was the first time my fever was upwards of 103, this time it didn't go over 101.
