Looking for some help here. I am compiling a list of plagues/curses/crazy medical practices/phenomena once attributed to a deity/the supernatural/etc. throughout human history. I will then show the later scientific explanation. Below are just a few examples from my sheet so far. Please post any that you are aware of...

6500 BCEvil SpiritsTrepanation. Holes were drilled into a person's skull who was behaving in what was considered an abnormal way to let out what people believed were evil spirits. The bone that was trepanned was then kept by the prehistoric people and may have been worn as a charm to keep evil spirits away.
700 BCSea StormsPoseidon, God of the sea, raised storms that sank ships. Before a voyage, sailors prayed to Poseidon for a safe journey. Sometimes drowning horses as a sacrifice to him. Alexander the Great paused at the Syrian seashore offering prayers to Poseidon.
14th CentBlack Death PlagueThis plague was a punishment from God, and the only way to be rid of the plague was to be forgiven by God. Many carved the symbol of the cross onto the front door of a house with the words "Lord have mercy on us." King Philip VI issued an edict against blasphemy, cutting off lips and tongues for this offense. He also outlawed black clothing, all work after Noon on Saturdays as well as all gambling and swearing, and demanded that everyone living in sin get married immediately. As a result, gambling declined so much that the makers of dice turned to making rosaries.

Thank you in advance!
