Prostitution - Yes or No

I have thought this for years and I want to get more opinions on the matter.

Should prostitution be legalized in the United States?

I vote "Yes", it is a harmless crime. If the women is legal and willing to sell her body for money and the man is willing to pay for the deed, then what is the harm? Plus, if monitored correctly we could cut back on STD's being passed around by prostitutes.

Just a thought, what do you all think?

Yes, because it is not my position to tell what other people due with their private life even if that private life is having sex with other people for money.

Here are some laws with regard to the issue.

Question 1: Why is prostitution prohibited?

Question 2: What are the factors which led to its prohibition?

Question 3: Who are against prostitution and what are their reasons?

Question 4: Who are for prostitution and what are their reasons?

Comment:

I'm not for or against the issue. My reason is because, I am not interested in the human form. I am not attracted to girls in a sexual manner, however, I like them. Besides, sex is free, if you know how to serenade effectively.

I don't get it. Hehe. Sex is free. Why make it a market?

I think it's a tricky thing to answer.

Prostitution via regulated brothels I have no problem with from any standpoint, really. The only difference between that and being a porn actor/actress is that you have less of a crowd, and usually more control. Usually they have greater security for the people who work there, and both parties usually have to provide evidence that they are "clean" so to speak.

It's street-walking I do have a problem with. It's not safe, for either side involved in the exchange.

Thats my thoughts...

Don't you think when/if they legalized prostitution that it would all be forced to be much like brothels. It would get the girls out of the streets and out of dangerous positions. Would stop men from picking up women that they think are going to be a prostitute and getting more than they wanted. Plus it would slow the spread of STD's....just kind of seems like a win, win to me but....perhaps I'm missing something.

The some of the missing factors are:

1. Religion
2. Politics
3. Ethics

I'm going to go with a "mostly no" on this one. My position here is similar to the one I have towards the death penalty and nuclear power: it sounds good on paper, and might work in a perfect world, but I'm afraid that the real-life application is too messy to allow given the state of our society.

Shouldn't these same factors be considered with pornography?

If in fact they are factors they sure haven't stopped porn from being a booming buisness.

Is porn and prostitution similar?

arg-fallbackName="offmyrocker"/>
How are they not?

A girl that works in porn is getting paid to have sex, the difference, on camera.

So your idea of prostitution is you as a third person watching one or more persons pleasuring themselves without your intervention?

You are still talking about the difference.

How is prostitution and porno different for the actors in porn movies??

In prostitution you get to be one of the actors. However, in porn movies, you only get to watch it, and like you said, cameras. ;)

For the Actors in the movies, not for the people watching it happen. If you are one of the actors you are still getting paid to have sex which isn't the over all idea of prostitution.

Here is some good reading for you. About the same thing we are talking about here.

I agree. They are not the same. ;)

Nice catch but a edit is in order:

EDIT: "For the Actors in the movies, not for the people watching it happen. If you are one of the actors you are still getting paid to have sex which isn't that the over all idea of prostitution."

And therefore they are not the same.

Look, the issue is prostitution and not pornography. We should stick to that.

They are at the moment NOT the same thing but there is a very fine line between the two.
a prostitute as a person "who engages or agrees or offers to engage in sexual conduct with another person in return for a fee." A pornographic actor does just that: Like a more typical prostitute, he or she engages in sex in return for a fee.

The process of filming and distributing pornography is considered protected speech, under the Supreme Court's First Amendment precedents. However, the First Amendment does not insulate the commission of crime from prosecution just because someone with a camera records the crime and intends to sell that recording to customers.

So, did you try to research on my initial question in this thread?

We were just talking about the differences between pornography and prostitution.....are you not going to finish the conversation??

As for your questions from before:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitution

There is the history of the "Words Oldest Profession", Prostitution, for you. That should answer all your questions and how it came to be all that it is today.
