Pro-am, local and regional opera and musical theatre groups

Back in the ante-diluvian days some thirty years ago when I first went online (with Compuserve, accessed through my trusty old US Robotics 16k dial-up modem), I asked the question in a music chatroom "are DIY music theatre performing groups a peculiarly British phenomenon?". I received many international responses from countries as far afield as Japan, the US and Switzerland assuring me otherwise. However, these days it's my impression that such grass-roots desire to perform (and come to see) live opera and music theatre is dying in the UK, and I was wondering if others feel the same, and is it true elsewhere in the world?

Well, it's almost exactly a week since I posted my last on this topic, and the complete lack of response speaks volumes. It would be easy to regard that as the take home message, but I can't help noticing that the last post date in many subject areas is months old. Maybe it's this forum that's dying.

And on that disheartening nore, I'm heading for bed.

I think there are no more than about 10 frequent users here. It is a shame, but no idea how or why it could be fixed. It seems to me that the fads and fashions of the internet are intrinsically hard to predict.

I read your post back when you wrote it... but I have nothing worth saying, so I didn't reply! ;)

I assume no one responded because they don't know and have nothing to say. Sad, but true.

Your topic has been viewed almost 100 times, so it's not for a lack of eyes on it.

Personally, I had to restrain myself from posting, since I harbor outright disdain towards theatre and opera, so I didn't want to just crap all over your post.

Sorry.

Well, that's annoying.

I just drafted a carefully considered reply (having logged in), only to have the site demand I log in again when I tried to post it. When I clicked on the "return to last page" (or however it reads) button, I found my efforts had been irretrievably lost to the cybervoid.

There's an allegory in there somewhere, but my meagre store of wit is too depleted to ferret it out.
