I understand that there were problems with the old chat but now with this new irc chat nobody talks. I have yet to have a conversation on the new chat. The only people on the new chat are people that sit and idle. i know that you dont want to change the chat back to the way it used to be but if there is any other way to have the chatroom other IRC that would be great.

Hi,

I'll be honest, it's unlikely the chat is going to change from IRC any time soon. However, I have made a change to the Mibbit settings if that's what you are using and it should now put people who are idling into a separate group from those who aren't. This should at least help you determine who is around.

I have plans to show how many people are in chat, how many have spoken recently, and from the data I'll gather, show an 'activity level' which will basically say how active the channel based on the number of people who have said something within the last 1-5 minutes.

It was actually quite active up till I went to bed last night at 2am BST. Unfortunately, IRC seems to breed idlers, I'm not sure why... I am always in there, or appear to be (if I am marked as [Away] I am probably asleep or out somewhere but will receive any pm's sent during that time, if I am not marked as away I will always respond if someone mentions my name or PM's me within reason). It's useful for me to idle in there just in case someone needs me.

I could potentially kick idlers but that doesn't necessarily seem fair... but I would encourage anyone who isn't actually there to change their name and add [Away] to it when they aren't going to be participating in chat.

Hope this helps.
