Magnetic pole reversal

arg-fallbackName="scalyblue"/>
I wonder how much energy it would actually take to affect the earth's rotation, not that it could possibly be applied...it would be like bacteria building microscopic rockets anchored a tiny partway into the shell of an egg in order to alter the rotational speed of the yolk

Magnetic pole reversals have happened a lot in the Earths history, and there's not a huge effect on life, or mass extinction events in the fossil record. If you want to worry about something, I'd go for gamma ray bursts!

Isn't there one aimed right our general direction? That--would--suck. Not that we'd even know.

I was referring to the weakening of the magnetic field that Pulsar mentioned, which would decrease our defence against cosmic rays.

Have you googled about this yet?

In case you can't be bothered here's a layman's guide:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tfLA1vKlfE

It covers the main points, there are better vids and there are worse ones, this one's adequate.

BTW "The Core" is one of the most pathetically bad movies ever made, so don't get worked up over those scenes.

Look at my previous post; I was referring to Pulsar's mention of the weakening of the magnetic field.
I am already aware of magnetic pole reversal and it's cycles.

The current weakening is thought to be a natural part of the pole reversal cycle, that's why I posted the link.

Ahh, no one had addressed the link between the two. So magnetic field weakening is really nothing to worry about?
