I just watched it with my family over the holiday break.... and I can't help but feel like it was a sad attempt at some modernisation of a religious myth....
I won't say too much due to spoilers, I guess stop reading incase I give some away if you haven't seen it....
The start is pretty good tbh, it sucked me in good, I was really into the numbers and disasters and the sort of horror/thriller/sci-fi aspect of it... with all the omens about solar flares etc.... Then the "aliens" came along... I really hoped they were aliens, but by the end I got the impression they were meant to be angels : /
It went downhill pretty much for the last half/third.... getting some serious religious undertones, lazy writing, bad nicolas cage acting with plenty of open ended questions and plot holes.
I was liking the idea of aliens sort of knowing the sun was going to get violent enough to end life on the planet and wanting to preserve it by performing a sort of noah's arc.... but with the predictions of non celestial related disasters, the constant references to his religious family (pastor preist, "i'll pray for you" etc.) and then the crux at the end with the whole "now I know I will see you and your dead mother and your friends dead mother again" and the aliens having what appeared to be wings..... I got the disheartning feeling it was just some reliigous tripe...
Maybe I'm over analysing and focusing on the supposed reliigous element because it's an issue that concerns other factors of my life... but I just found the last half incredibly frustrating...
Does anyone else have some insight? Or know more about the intentions/meanings of the last part of the movie? Or was it just a shit movie >.<
