Japanese traditionnal medecine: Kampo / Kanpo

Hey guys.
As some of you may know, my wife and I live in Japan.
She's japanese, I'm french, and all is fine and well. Love my job, love my wife, but...
Lately, we have been consulting a clinic because no matter how hard we tried in the last year or so, it looks like we can't have a baby.
So, we underwent some tests...everything is fine, but it looks like my wife's cycle might be a bit short which apparently lessens our chances to have a baby or something...
So, the doctor in that clinic advised my wife to come again next month to check if the "short cycle" thing is a regular pattern or not, and if so, she said she would give her some kampo medecine to make the cycle longer...

How about that?

What do you guys think about this kampo thing?
Being a westerner and, well, a skeptic, I naturally loathe all these "japanese"/chinese medecines and anything related to them, like acupuncture.
I would like to know your opinion about that.
Is there any real study about the efficacy of kanpo medicine? Has it been proven to work?
I know japanese people use it for anything and everything: from headaches to diabetes to alzheimer...Nonetheless, I personally tend to think it's a state assisted crookery. You know, to protect a tradition from the hard cold facts.

Anyway, I'm curious to know what you think guys.
About kanpo and acupuncture.
I love my wife, but I'd like to make her listen to the voice of reason.

Thanks!
