That was great! Thanks for the read. I have identified these techniques before from the few times I've been exposed to this kind of stuff, but never knew what they were called.
If the reader makes a statement that elicits no reaction from the subject they will quickly move on until they say something that does get a response. They will then focus on this "hit" in order to get the subject to forget the "miss".
I've seen comedians use this kind of thing, just in a different way. They say a mini-punchline or a little part that might be funny but they aren't sure since every audience is different. They begin the punchline saying it as if it's just another part of the story or joke or whatever, and if anyone starts laughing they immediately switch to "punchline" mode, and will then talk about that line more than they would have and go into more detail to wring out more laughs from it, since the audience finds it funny. If people aren't laughing, then the comedian can just keep going and act as if that wasn't supposed to be funny or a punchline.

Although I've noticed that really good comedians don't need to do this much because they basically know at what points in their act the audience will laugh.

Anyways, thanks for the post!

Nice. Any expose of this nonsense is fine by me, and you laid it out clearly.

I wish I lived somewhere that permitted wandering round of an evening without the very real threat of getting horribly murdered.
