How long before we abandon national anthems?

I mean really...

Isn't it time we gave these nationalistic, jingoistic brain farts a rest?

Exhibit 1:
Some bastich said:
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen!

O lord God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall!
Confound their knavish tricks,
Confuse their politics,
On you our hopes we fix,
God save the Queen!

Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world ov'er

From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign!
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

I would very much like to know if anyone can think of a good reason we should keep them around. Perhaps your nation's anthem is better than the cringe-inducing, supine, obsequious, saccharin vomit above and I'm completely wrong?

Human kind'd sooner go extinct than abandon nationalism and xenophobia.

I don't care for my country. I'm not a patriot and I don't understand why people would even consider patriotism as a reasonable position. Being proud of being born in this place and not the other is just silly.

I know only few lines of the national anthem. At least there isn't anything about god in it.

Ha! I love yous guys. Patriotism doesn't make any sense to me either.

They're mainly used at sports functions, celebrations and whatnot, which apparently require solidarity of some kind to be displayed, so what would you replace them with?

Surely not ventriloquism or mime acts...

You should read the bible for it tells us a one world government is coming in the future but it won't last long because the Antichrist and the lamb with two horns take it over and turn it into the mark of the beast system in which will be a one world government, economy and religion.Everybody will be forced to take the mark of the beast 666 in order to buy or sell.Your faith in atheism is going to be tested because those who refuse the mark and refuse to worship the Antichrist as God will be beheaded. There is good reasons to believe the anti-christ will come from an Islamic country and the lamb with two horns will represent fake Christianity and they work together so national anthems will be dome away with but be careful what you wish for.

That is a mistranslation. The Bible never says "666", it is nowadays being interpreted as suc but it used to be "616" and a few others at time.

That could be correct but I don't really get hung up on the numbers really because there are so many different theories about it but the overall point is that everybody will be forced to take the mark or be shut out from financial transactions and be beheaded if they refuse the mark, this is the main point.

Prophecy is a poor guide for anything.

Please keep on topic of whether we should abandon national anthems.

I see no particular pressing need to eradicate them, but I also see no particular meaning or purpose for them.

If push came to shove, I'd find it really hard to care either way.

No offense but I think a person has to be willfully blind not to see bible prophecies coming,I see them clear which is why national anthems will go away, there is going to be a one world government in the future, the spirit of Anti-Christ is already here with a desire to unite the world.I'm going to be raptured though so I won't be here for much of it,if any of it because Jesus is coming for us who are his people once everybody that can be saved by Jesus in our world have been saved.

...this makes more sense than you do.

I think anthems are necessary. Sometimes the lineups at the stadiums are long and I likes me uberdog and nachos. I don't miss any game time and I'm respectful for standing while in line. Also it's a bonus when the singer messes up the lines or gets booed for sounding horrible. :)

You were warned to keep on topic, you didn't, not to mention the other instances of you jumping into threads to proselytise. You seem incapable of having any discussion without shoehorning your faith into it. Owing you my not logging in for a while I've been met with numerous resurrected threads and new threads where you've done bugger all but try and make the topic about your faith. Consider this an official l warning; when told to stay on topic, you stay on topic.

Deal? Good, glad you agree.

One issue with abandoning national anthems is what would we replace them with for the opening of sports matches or the issuing of medals at the Olympics? I guess I don't mind national anthems so much, I actually enjoy singing mine. The references to the sky daddy I could do without but I figure they're in there due to when the anthem was written and thus a product of the time.

What's even the point of that?

It is especially weird in formula one where they have teams comprising of people from multiple countries, the driver may be from a different country than the team and the team's country is just the country where their headquarters are located. Toyota used to be located in Germany. McLaren is located in England, they use japanese engines and one of the drivers is a Spaniard. RedBull are registered in Austria, use french engines ( *sigh* my car is french and it's piece of shite ) and had a German driver.

Another funny fact about F1 is that a lot of the top drivers don't even live in their countries. Monaco seems to be popular amongst them.

At the end of each race there are 2 anthems played, one for the winning driver and the other for the winning team. But what is the point of that? The teams are really sponsored by multinational corporations. It's not even like in Olympics where the competitors are supported, at least in part, by countries.

In some team sports, like football, some players are bought by the country they represent. They're given citizenship just because they're good players. So a team can comprise of players from other countries.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think esport teams aren't tied to a country and can have teams of mixed nationality. Do they play anthems at esport games?

I don't now how long but I think it is time to phase the anthems out. F1 is a good example of how contrived the idea of playing an anthem at a sports event is.
