Hi all.

I was posting over at Evolution Fairy Tale for a while and quite frankly just feel like it is a complete waist of time. Rarely do the arguments go deeper than flies are still flies kind of thing. Occasionally someone will post something of substance, but no one really understands the argument, it is just a cut and paste that seems to agree with their position. So I decided to give this place a chance. I also participate over at EvC Forum, but lately the discussions over there are primarily political in nature, which I am not interested in.

I am a Christian, and I got involved in the evolution / creation debate about 6 - 7 years ago. I started out as a YEC mostly by default, I had never really thought about it. But as I began to think about it and do some research, I found that little, if any, of that position made any sense. Now I consider myself an Old Earth Creationist, but Theistic Evolutionist probably fits better. However, I don't care much for labels as they don't really tell the whole story.

Anyway, I have worked in the automotive industry most of my adult life as a tool and die maker and as you know, that industry has taken a serious dive in recent years. My participation in this debate renewed the love of science that I had as a kid and I have abandoned the manufacturing industry to pursue a career in science. I am now a senior at a small liberal arts university studying Environmental Biology (I choose this school because my wife worked there and tuition was free!! the only way I was going to be able to afford to go back to school). I expect to graduate in Fall 2013.

So, I am coming here hoping to be able to have some more in-depth discussions regarding evolutionary theory.

Hi HBD :)

Welcome to LoR, good luck for your graduation, and happy new year!

Left over pudding is, I believe, to be found in chat.

Only black pudding left in the chat. And some apple pie!

This would be my greatest dream, I'd love to keep going to school until I was old, you're very lucky.

Indeed, I am very lucky. Although I'm not sure I like the implication that I'm old :) . Oh well, guess I kinda am.

Now what I need to do is convince my wife to let me continue on to grad school, but that won't be free ...

Yay, it's HBD, the voice of sanity from the EFT forums!

Good to have you here.

Not sure if you find what you're looking for in here, but I think you have a better chance than over at EFT.

Debating creationists - even the nicest ones - about evolution rarely progresses past the initial stages, where even the basic terms are a matter of contention - as you can probably see from the thread where I - stupidly - tried to talk sense to that Sammy7 guy. At least gilbo seems to listen.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay! :)

Greetings,

Welcome to LoR, herebedragons! :D

"Infy" - Inferno - had put in a good word for you, so it's nice to see you head this way.

I had tried registering there but don't seem to have been approved - I wonder why!? :?

Kindest regards,

James

Thanks. I probably won't spend much time over here trying talk about the connection between religion and science, which is what I had hoped for over at EFT, but you're right you can't progress beyond even the initial stages. They deny or confuse even the basic tenants of science. I would say sammy is just a troll. gilbo is rather smart, but he has made up his mind that he is right no matter what, so ... not much you can do with that.

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't seen any moderators around EFT in a while, maybe they are all just busy. ??? idk. Maybe they have there quota of evolutionist - they can only take on so many at a time. lol

I'm sure if you can't find a thread that deals with something in which you're interested, you can always start a new one - you can be sure you'll get a good (and testing) debate.

Kindest regards,

James

Welcome herebedragons. I have been reading several threads over at Evolutuion Fairytales (it would not allow me to register) and found your post quite enjoyable. I am glad to see you here and would love to get your opinion on the two threads gilbo12345 started.

I also must ask, was your name inspired by Carl Sagan?

Thanks.

Your the first person to ever ask about my name. It actually comes from a series of books of the same name by Sharon K. Penman. They are about the Plantagenet royal family in medieval England. The term itself was used by mapmakers to indicate areas of the map that were unknown and thus to be feared. When they would come to these areas while drawing a map, they would simply write "here be dragons." I thought the term was quite fitting regarding the creation and evolution debate. Thanks for asking, I finally got to tell the story :)

I kind of assumed your name was a direct reference to this video:

It's been years since I've seen it now, but I remember it as being quite good. :)
