Has anyone contacted anyone specializing in copyright law?

I was just wondering if anyone here has made an attempt to find someone who could help deal with the issues surrounding DMCAs? I'm not talking about helping to dispute them, but rather to provide guidance in amending the DMC act itself so that it can no longer be used for malicious censorship.

Someone that immediately comes to mind is Lawrence Lessig. Creative Commons and Electronic Frontier Foundation are two organizations that might be interested in helping. Someone like Cory Doctorow might be interested in this type of thing as well, although he wouldn't have the same level of expertise.

Can anyone else think of other experts who might be interested in fighting internet censorship by pushing for new laws?

I was under the impression that dprjones was a practicing lawyer but not one that specializes in copyright. No offense to his abilities, but I highly doubt he would be capable of getting something like the DMCA amended.

I doubt any common lawyer could ever change something like the DMCA, especially since dpr isn't even a US citizen. He is, however, probably one of the most able people on youtube for helping those with DMCA issues.

I think the word 'guidance' might have been the wrong word there though. 'Help' is probably more appropriate.

I'm not sure how non-US citizens could help guide its change (is it even being disputed in court atm? I'm British so wouldn't necessarily be privy to that), but I do know Brad Templeton (now ex-) chairman of the EFF (not well, but hey) and could ask him how the fight goes...

Well I've spoken to Brad. He said the best guidance he can give is available here and it looks pretty comprehensive.

He passed no comment on fighting the act itself, saying it's not under dispute; I'm not sure what there is to be done about amending or scrapping it - it's probably here to stay.


Edit: lol edited the wrong post at first...

Just a note on the OP:

I don't think Creative Commons itself has any relevance to this because the licenses are used to compliment established copyright rules and are not a replacement, nor do I think they have an official position on the DMCA beyond having rules with which it complies. That's not to say its members won't.
