Getting things rolling again

What was previously in place that we can use to build on? Or do we want to just start fresh?

I need to work out some details with my ISP - my bandwidth seems to be throttled right now. I pay for a 1gb pipe but only get about 5mb down (and 40up). Now I just had the line installed Friday and only got power turned on in the house yesterday (I JUST moved in) so I haven't done any troubleshooting on it yet. I'm planning to do that after work today. Maybe, I'm not feeling well today, so it's possible I just pass out, too.

Anyway, point being - my computer and line should be sufficient to host anything we need.

This place has a special spot in my heart, and all of you assholes do too. I've always been a lurker here, never gone more than a couple months without dropping in, but due to the site being blocked at my previous job I wasn't on often. Prole sent me a PM yesterday that made me realize this wasn't blocked at my new job, so I can browse while idling again. But that kind of rekindled my interest in seeing this place come to life.

But in the suggestion & issues forum there was mention of getting the show going again. I wanted to be involved previously but due to various health issues and work, never really had the time. Well, now I have significantly more free time - I'm treating my sleep disorder, and I work 10 minutes from home. I used to drive 2.5 hours a day for work (1.25 each way) and sleep fitfully for about 12 hours a day. I've gained like 8 hours a day to do stuff.

I'm happy to edit and produce the show, and to contribute to the research.
We have some facilities for collaboration still sitting around like the wiki, and we're still set up with RSS feeds, iTunes, YouTube, etc
Basically, all we need to get back up and running again are ideas and people...

Dragan Glas made the point that there were still plenty of kooky woo videos being produced on YouTube it would be fun to deconstruct. Perhaps we could take one per episode and illustrate why it's bollocks.

I'd be down with that. I think someone mentioned starting with the anti-vaxx movement - maybe we could start there? I forget where I saw it mentioned specifically, did a lot of catching up today...

Well, not to dampen the enthusiasm, but our last podcast was about vaccines.

Not that we can't do another one, obviously.

Thanks tux :) and that doesn't dampen it. Good info I missed out on cause I haven't fully caught up yet...heh. I wouldn't want to rehash the topic immediately.

What about food woo? Have we done anything there? I've done a lot of research on dieting this past year and sifted the science from the quack on it. Down 180lbs from pretty much just dietary changes. :D 182 as of this morning!

Sounds good! I still think a sort of magazine format would work, with several small sections and a main topic. Can we find a related video on the YouTubes to run a critical eye over?

Also required: a good episode title/pun.

I'll be in the IRC for a while this evening if anyone wants to throw stuff at me.

I more than likely won't be - or if I am it'll only be for a few minutes. I can't IRC at work, and I'm slammed with plans til like, next Tuesday.

But I'm scratching down some ideas.

I'm willing to assist as well, I can probably have a dedicated server put aside for something and a 50mb pipe at my house.

I thought the LoR show should be more of an informal discussion/debate show. Let me know when you're spitballing ideas and I'll hop on chat, etc.

Greetings,

Apart from the "Poo the Woo" YT idea, another option is to have a discussion on the latest discoveries in science, similar to the "Best of Last Week" links I sometimes post in the "With regards to links" thread - only to expand it to as many science news websites as possible to get the really best science/technology news stories.

Also, HWIN's "Know Your Bones" could be featured to encourage audience involvement.

If we can't do a section on the anti-vax movement, Edzard Ernst has a number of posts on alt-med: homoeopathy (FDA are now going to investigate it), chiropractic, etc. And there's always Bad Science for similar ideas for the show. All of these would fit under the "Poo the Woo" banner.

Kindest regards,

James

I am just wondering how often people want to see the show? Should it be weekly, biweekly, monthly? I mean, right now everyone is kicking around topics and no one is talking about the logistics of how the show will be run. Perhaps, someone needs to set up a date for everyone that wants to participate can get together and spit ball ideas.

I will say as of now, I would like to be apart of the show, but I would only be able to do a segment and not participate in any live discussion (life is getting in the way of my internet Funtime).

I was thinking about this earlier, actually. Sending submissions for your own sections is a cool idea, assuming it can still meet a deadline. I'd say that we're probably better off setting a longer period between episodes at first, perhaps quarterly. I'm working on a better way to organise ourselves, but we need to have a proper brainstorming session before we get too ahead of ourselves. I recommend setting a day soon to meet in the IRC. I can add the date as a system wide announcement so we all see it each time we browse here...

I've still got all the show media in the event you haven't, though I assume you have because I got them off your server to start with.

Make it a Sunday and I'll be there with bells on. Not this Sunday though - I have to move furniture, which is going to be 4 hours of driving and who knows how much lifting and moving all day
