Fusing TV and streaming/internet could or should it be done?

Well once again this is a kind of side branch of the downloading thread.
The thing is a lot of people say that while they do like to see movies and tv-shows having to watch them on small computer screens isn,´t something they are very found off.
So they watch their movies and tv-shows on their tvs when ever possible.

Well here,´s where my idea or my idea that,´s perhaps not absolutely correct as it has been thought of before (I remember watching it as a kid in a program and I think it has been shown In many sci-fi shows also).
The idea is fusing the internet and tv or rather the streaming part of the internet.

Today we have different channels with each their own timetable for their programs and if you miss them well your only real chance is to catch the re-run and if you don ,´t well too bad for you.
With streaming it would be different instead of having to switch between channels you would turn on your tv and get a menu, where you would be able to chose the different channels and shows from there.
On each channel there would be this week, month or even this year,´s programs on that you could pick and chose from to your liking.
It wouldn,´t matter which time you chose to watch it, because it would be there all the time for you to watch it when ever you pleased.

A thing that could also be possible is for you to choose exactly which show you want to watch and won,´t.
A problem today is that if you pay for lets say channels such as History Channel or Discovery you don,´t just get the show you want to se Battles B.C, Warriors, MythBusters, Dirty Jobs and so forth, but also A TON of other programs you have absolutely no interest in what so ever in watching.

With streaming its would be possible to only pick those shows you want to watch and not being forced to pay for other shows that you might not want to watch.

Should it be done? I think it has to be done, as the generation remembering a time without the Internet is rapidly disappearing, in a few generations anyone born after the year of 2000 won,´t remember a time without the internet and as such if the tv-companies keep on going in the same line as always they will face MAYOR losses, as the young generation will just use the internet and maybe other gadgets to watch their favorite shows on tv no matter what the law might have to say about it.

But that,´s just my opinion what,´s yours can internet and tv be fused together and should it be done?

in short: Youtube on TV.

its not impossible, you just need to hook your tv to internet.
a friend of mine has his PS3 hooked up to his computer network, he can internet on tv that way... and also watch youtube and such.

now we need companies with websites to cater to that idea.

What are you talking about, we already do that.
I could get that in a pack with other services for €35,45 whit a optical fibre 100Mb internet conection + mobile internet + video club + telephone + high definition TV.
Plus you can do it the hold fashion way by hooking up your laptop to the TV.
Where have you guys been living?

Re: Fusing TV and streaming/internet could or should it be d

Okay maybe i didn,´t formulate it correctly.

Supposedly you want to see the season finally of Doctor Who, Fringe, Mythbusters or whatever.

Well to see that you have to tune in on Discovery channel or some other channel that host the show.
However you can,´t see it whenever you like, sure you can record the show on some of the newer digital tv-boxes but you still have to set it to record at exactly the moment its sent on tv.

So if you want to see Buster getting blown to bits by Adam and Jamies newest testing, you have to start the recorder or watch the channel at exactly 8/20:00 in the evening.

What i,´m wondering is could it be twisted so there wouldn,´t be anymore mythbusters at 20 on Discovery, but simply at the start of the week this entire weeks program (except for the news) is put up on a youtube kind of program where you can choose your show from a list.

Now Internet and tv fusion might have already been done but the different companies (at least in Denmark where i live) still show all the different programs on the different channels at different times and if don,´t see it at the moment its aired well too bad you,´ve missed it, maybe you can hope to catch in on the rerun.

So once again could it be done? abolish the different channels and simply have (when ever you turn on your tv) a menu where you can choose what show you want to watch? and could it be done on a global scale?

Re: Fusing TV and streaming/internet could or should it be d

I'd say it's almost inevitable.

If someone fails to see the marketing potential of combing streaming with TV I'll be extremely surprised.

I barely watch TV because there is hardly ever anything I want to watch on the schedule. I prefer to watch things online because I can watch exactly what I want when I want. I can pause it and come back to it whenever. It's so much better than TV that way - I would be really really surprised if someone doesn't fuse TV with streaming/internet because it would be such an improvement upon regular TV.

BBC iplayer + Virgin Media (cable) already do this in the UK.

All the main UK channels have internet-based watch later services. Many of said services are already available on X-Box/PS3 which means that you can watch them on your TV, and newer TVs and blu-ray players are beginning to have such technology integrated. The blu-ray player I got this year features the BBC iPlayer and something similar for channel 5.

The company I work for actually provides such solutions for media companies, although that's not what my specific job is. If you don't have it yet in Denmark I'm pretty sure it won't be long before it happens.

Re: Fusing TV and streaming/internet could or should it be d

I don't know the state of the market in Denmark but in Portugal something similar is already done. Where the service provider gives you acess to your favourite series on demand, this is not a chanel like CNN or BBC but rather a service integrated with your TV package. Some of the shows you can see come from live recording from traditional chanels (recorded by the company that provides your service). This of course is still limited to authorization, copyright laws and negotiations, if a television chanel says that they can't record the show to make it available to you later then they can not provide those services.
However it does not simply work that they just make it available in the beging of the week the shows that they want to air on during week, no content yet exists to be made available, and television chanels have a vested interest not to release the content before time so you have to watch their chanel to see it first (because of audience shares to lure advertisement and also a bit of the magic of television).

What I want is the ability to watch what I want, when I want, inside my own brain.

Watching porn doesn't make you invisible, you would still have to go trough the embarassmet of being seen in church.

Aside from the awkwardness factor in case it causes (unwanted?) reactions.. why does that sound soooo wrong even to a porn-approving atheist like me?

Because usually the only sexual activity that goes on in Church is between the priest and the altar boy?

I'm not sure I get what you're asking. My roommate bought a new tv and it has built in apps like netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc.. We didn't have cable so everything we watched was streaming...
