Obviously detonating it on Earth would be a horrifying prospect, but a detonation in space (perhaps on the other side of the sun) would be interesting to say the least. And would likely show anyone listening in for hundreds of light years that we are here.
And IIRC, Arthur C Clarke had the idea of using an enormous nuclear bomb to plot the positions of every comet and meteorite in the solar system by picking up the radio blips as the light from the bomb hits a body and reflects back to Earth. So the benefits of building one could be very important in the long run.
