Evidence of correlation between criminality and religiosity

Greetings, fellow FreeThinkers!

For my first post, I'm aiming @AronRa specifically, but happy to receive substantive replies from anywhence.

AronRa frequently mentions in his videos that studies show that religious people are more likely than others to commit crimes, have abortions, etc. I've also heard claims of the exact opposite, so I'd like to get some links/references to verifiable sources that would substantiate these claims. Seems to me like a very important sphere of knowledge, so worth vetting before repeating.

Whenever I have mentioned these, (as I did in the speech below) I also show screenshots of the news where I got that information. So it should be easy enough to Google each one.

It would help if you got a citation manager. Might I suggest Zotero? I use it, and it has taken out the worst part of academia, managing citations. It has a plug-in for Chrome that will automatically take an article and take all its information to create a reference. It also has a plug-in for Word that will automatically put all the citations you need into a write-up.

In the future, when someone asks for citations such as the above. You can have them organized in your Zotero, open up a Word document to create a reference page, and share that.

As a Christian, without references, I would say Aron Ra is correct based on my own personal experiences being a criminal and also spending an average amount of time behind bars in the US. It certainly seems true to me.

I think it is a meaningful line of thought and am interested to know what atheists think about this. I'll have to check out that video Aron posted. Thank you for your post, Puer Scientia.

I have to say its disappointing when Aron posits something that might be bold and interesting and then just presents a few lackluster data points in a video and never attempts an in-depth explanation for anything.

Because when religion is in the mix you can be in-depth as you want but in the end it will not matter.

Why not make a video highlighting suicide rates among gays and transgenders and call it "Being Queer Ruins Everying"? It would be just as fucking meaningless as Arons vid..

What is an average amount of time behind bars? I'm curious because I'm wondering if I manged to beat the average myself. There's a great John Waters appearance on maybe Leno where he tells a few stories all of which involved someone who was in jail or had gone to jail and Leno says to him you sure seem to know a lot of people who have been in jail and Waters answers yeah, he doesn't really trust anyone who hasn't been in jail.

I don't have any citations but there are a lot of studies/stats that show all kinds of pathological outcomes are worst in the more religious states, stuff like teen pregnancies, murder, divorce, etc. Oh yeah, porn is really popular too in the most religious states.

:D Probably all together about 5 years. I would go in for 6 month get out go back 2 months later for another 6 months or 1 year or 2 years. I was young and thought the judge would go easy on me for being honest and pleading guilty at my first appearance, otherwise I probably would have only had to do about half the time I did.

That could be. Interesting.

Yeah, honesty is rarely a good idea, it puts you at a disadvantage since most lie and the legal system just doesn't give a fuck.

At 5 years, you got me beat by a bit, but 'average'? Maybe for people who have done jail time but not for folks in general, believe it or not, most folks haven't been thrown in jail. Their loss, everyone really should experience doing time, especially anyone on a jury. Not that it's something to brag about but I'd bet my less than 5 years was a lot more 'interesting' than what you went through, nothing I'd care to broadcast, but if interested, hit me up with a PM.

That's cool.Yeah to be honest most of the time I did was rather uneventful. I don't even remember being in a fight before. I was pretty young back then and probably also pretty lucky.
