LOL ESP

what does that stand for? Extremely stupid piffle?

Extrasensory perception. Perceiving things through means other than the senses.
And thus another rhetorical question is answered!

In soviet Russia, Extra Sensory Perceives you.

Greetings,

I think that peripheral sensing (Gestalt) is often confused with/mistaken for ESP.

Let me give you some examples...

Many years ago, whilst coming home from Dublin city centre, I was crossing a bridge (Portobello - for those who might know it) - there are roads on either side of it, so it forms a "H", the horizontal bar of the bridge continuing on either side as the main street.

I'd continued walking up the main street when I began to get the feeling that, if I turned round, I'd see a red vehicle pass from right-to-left on this side of the bridge.

I dismissed the notion as silly and continued walking up the street - but the feeling became stronger. When it got strong enough to be "certainty", I thought, "OK, I'll check" - I looked back over my shoulder, and saw...

...a red vehicle pass from right-to-left on this side of the bridge.

I thought about it, and realized that... like most people do, I had looked left and right before crossing the road on both sides of the bridge: I must have seen the red vehicle in the distance - whether directly or peripherally to my vision - and had subconsciously tagged it - timing its arrival at the bridge.

No ESP involved.

I've sometimes done the same thing with tape recorders - where I was playing a music tape to the end and then wanted to wind back to where a particular song I liked was located, so I could listen to it again.

Once, I started a tape rewinding, and went to the bedroom window to look out at the trees and sky - after a while I "felt" that it was time to stop the tape - so I went back to the recorder and stopped the tape rewinding and started to play it.

It was exactly at the start of the song I wanted to hear again.

Again, no ESP involved.

The only time I went to an astrologer* - I wanted to get an "out-of-the-box" viewpoint for a personal problem for which I couldn't see a solution (a psychotherapist would have cost a lot more!) after making a appointment by phone, during which time I gave him my date/time of birth and location (nothing else) - he started off talking about the external world. I told him I wasn't interested in the "meeting a tall, dark, handsome stranger" stuff, just the internal (psychological) side.

He then concentrated on that - which was interestingly appropriate, though I didn't accept all of it at the time - only years later.

However, he returned to the external aspects and said that there was one thing that was upcoming in the chart - very strongly indicated, according to him - and that was that "someone would invite me to a birthday party this weekend" (remember that this was years ago - not now!).

I was extremely sceptical at this - I hadn't been to any birthday (or other) parties for years (partly due to the psychological issue) and didn't know of any that were coming up. I told him so and he again insisted that it was strongly indicated but I didn't accept it and we moved on.

That weekend, on Saturday, I answered a knock at the door to find the younger brother of a classmate on the doorstep - he wanted to borrow my brother's music tape collection ... for his birthday party (the same day).

I wished him a happy birthday - but didn't ask to be invited, and he didn't offer - I gave him my brother's tape collection and he went off.

Still, it was the sort of thing that gets one thinking...

And this is where such things can result in the "Tortucan" scenario - where someone gets something into their heads and it becomes extremely difficult to convince them otherwise.

You have the same thing with animal behaviourists who work with dogs, for example, with unusual problems involving nervousness about people or places or objects.

Dr. Mugford, a well-known animal behaviourist, talks about one such case in his book, "Dr, Mugford's Casebook".

A dog-owner told him that his dog refused to walk down a particular street - as the owner normally preferred to take this route to the shops, if he had his dog with him, he had to take "the long way".

Dr. Mugford took the dog for a walk and the dog refused to go down this street.

On questioning the owner, the owner finally remembered that - years previously - on one occasion, the then puppy had been startled by someone slamming a first-floor window whilst they were going down this street.

This "bolt-from-the-blue" type of experience is extremely difficult to mitigate against.

Equally, for humans it has the same sort of effect - like the astrologer's prediction - it appears to "prove" astrology works.

And so it is with the Administrator on that site - his experiences are difficult for him to explain (unless they're similar to the ones I've described - I haven't visited that site, so don't know what those are...).

But, undoubtedly, they aren't ESP in the "supernatural" sense of the term.

[* As a teenager, I'd read a great deal about philosophy/theology, psychology and parapsychology (including astrology) following my falling away from RC. As a result, I find that I can - generally - "tag" attractive ladies who are Air signs (Aquarius, Gemini and Libra). I'm Aquarian myself, my mother is Gemini.

With Geminians, I sense their .... liveliness - can't really put my finger on it. My mother was like that and I spot it with attractive ladies, as I said. With Librans, I get nothing - it's like a radar ping without the ping-back - it's as if they're hollow. With Aquarians, I get a "click" in my head.

When I was in hospital, years ago for an eye operation, a nurse was putting drops in my eyes in the ward. Another nurse came in to deal with another patient across from my bed.

From the moment she walked in, I felt this "click" in my head - there's no other way to describe it, it was a actual "click" - and looked round to see her and continued to look at her as she was dealing the other patient.

My nurse asked me what was wrong - I continued looking at the other nurse for a while and then turned back to my nurse, saying, "Nothing - she's an Aquarian". My nurse looked at me - a bit worriedly! - and then turned to her colleague asking her what sign she was - to which the other, somewhat puzzled, replied, "Aquarius, ... why?"

My nurse -

You might ask, "Why don't you "tag" them with Jungian or some other psychological category system?" - I don't know, that's just how I tag them, though the other "mainstream" categories are undoubtedly unconsciously playing their part.]

Kindest regards,

James
