I have an external hard drive but it is acting weird. My laptop recognizes the hard drive because it makes the beeping noise when I plug it into my computer. The device manager recognizes it. It is in the safely remove hardware thing, yet it does not show up on the my computer explorer. Absolutely nothing was changed since the last time I used it so I do not know what is wrong. I cannot explore the hard disk. Does someone know how to fix it and if so how? My laptop runs on Windows XP service pack 3.

There have been some recent updates for XP and I am now having the same issue with my Sansa MP3 player while at work (home PC uses Windows 7).

I'm guessing these could be related as both our devices are removable storage.

Typical. Right when I post this, a friend of mine comes online who could also help me with this problem. Don't need help anymore. D'oh. My issue has been solved so I would like to request that this thread be locked.

I went to the computer manager in windows, and clicked properties for the external hard drive, and changed the allocation of the disk. It was (G:) and changed it to (J:) on my laptop. Don't remember how it is done exactly but once you are in the computer manager window, it should not be too difficult to do it yourself.

hmm, did you had another USB device plugged in into your computer?
this tends to screw up the regular drive-mapping in most cases, certainly when its a flash-drive.

I don't know what it was. The (G:) drive was already taken for some network disk. I was at uni then so that might have been the biggest problem because there is no (G:) now.

You mean:
Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management > right-click the disk > Change Drive Letter and Paths
