Books to Movies

Can you think of many you liked?

I can think of a few offhand, like Dune, most Harry Potter (Yes, I'm a Potterhead), although I haven't really combed through the whole The Pillars of the Earth manifesto, I wonder if the miniseries measures up. (I liked it, by the way.)

Well, there is Lord of the Rings, of course, and since it's been mentioned Kite Runner, but I'm having difficulty coming up with others.

EDIT: The animated Secret of NIMH was pretty good.

I like Lord of the Rings but in some ways it also ruined the books for me. I loved Secret of NIMH. I, Claudius was fantastic as well, but I admit to not having read the Graves' novel.

The Golden Compass was also pretty good - shame they probably won't make the rest of the books.

The Golden Compass seemed like perhaps it might be too complicated for a literal translation, so I do wonder if it could have pulled off sequels.

Of Mice and Men was pretty good and I liked Perfume when they made the movie out of it. Wasn't that happy with the Potter movies especially the third one. LOTR was good but I kind of see it separate of the book. Although it was very different than the book, HGTTG was a awesome movie. Can't think of others I like so if I think of more I'll post them.

I think I'd almost say anything with vampires in it makes a better book. But anything Charles Dickens or Sherlock Holmes makes a better movie.

Oh, and the old Watership Down was phenomenal.

This is really adding to my reading list.

In the book? People were also sucked into the great nothingness of atomic and material unmaking because of dimensional tears, and pursued by thanatos-type scythed creatures who gobbled up their souls but were only visible to children.

The book is called Northern Lights, 'The Golden Compass' is the American version of the title just as the 'Sorcerer's Stone' is the American version of 'Philosopher's Stone'.

Publishers have a tendency to dumb down titles when they cross the Atlantic.

I suppose I enjoyed Battlefield Earth roughly the same amount in book or movie form.

Nosferatu was really good.

Harry Potter came out as "the Philosopher's stone" in Canada aussi avec the same cover art as in the UK. And the world is round, which means you could really swim off one coast of Britain and return to the other. But I think you've just outted yourself as a closet Potter fan. I think!

The more recent Harry Potter films came out quite well (the first two were awful, IMO).
The Lord of the Rings was an absolute triumph.
Watership Down was very good.



I disliked the 80's film version of Dune, but the more recent Children of Dune TV series was good.
I hated The Golden Compass film. It didn't live up to Northern Lights at all. I'm really, really tempted to go into a long rant about it, but I'll just say it should have been an adult film and left in all the blasphemy and brutality of the book.

I preferred the LOTR movies to the books but I have trouble stomaching most fantasy literature.

I'll throw in the obvious Shawshank Redemption because I watched it this week.
