Automatic Log Out

The automatic log out feature should be reworked. Perhaps, before automatically logging out a user, a box will appear and tell one that they only have a minute left unless they click a button found on that popup.

I won't be implementing a popup (assuming it's possible, it's awful design and often killed by one's browser settings making it entirely redundant), and it's trivial to avoid being logged out anyway.

At the login screen you tick the box that says "Log me on automatically each visit". This keeps you logged in until you physically log out.

I could probably change the wording of the above if that helps.

Interestingly though, I get logged out roughly once a month and I have no idea why. It sometimes happens when I clear my browser, but it also sometimes happens when I enter this site from another computer. There seems to be no pattern.

When you clear your browser, you delete the cookie that tells the browser your current status (logged in temp, logged in perm).

If you're using Chrome or Firefox across computers by account, only user data would be transferred (username/passwords/bookmarks etc), not session data (cookies/images/stylesheets etc).

I think the wording should be changed at least. That way people understand that there is an X amount of minutes they have before they will be automatically logged out. Knowing that will remove the blame from the site and onto the user.

Have changed from "Log me on automatically each visit" to "Remember me indefinitely".

How's that?

Time will tell. We have to see if new users recognize they need to do that in order for them not to be logged out when they write long posts.
