Appeal to Dexter

Dogma's Demise

So I've noticed that Dexter (the fictional vigilante serial killer) has become quite popular among certain people who watch the show. People who, disillusioned with the, often inefficient, justice system almost wish a real life Dexter existed. Some have even tried to copy him in real life (although very poorly, totally n00bish even).

Now don't get me wrong, I love the show, but it does seem to me like a lot of people have missed the bigger picture here.

1. Dexter is SICK in the head and his "code" is nothing more than an excuse to carry out his homicidal urges while minimizing his chances to get caught (most of his victims are known to be criminals and few people would miss them). It has nothing to do with justice, he's simply been conditioned to go after criminals, and if you were to put him in an isolated peaceful village with no criminals, who knows what would happen given that his urges wouldn't stop.

2. It is simply false that Dexter always goes after people who evade justice. Often it's Dexter who either withholds information/evidence or deliberately sabotages an investigation, so he can carry out the "punishment" himself. Is that really justice?

3. Dexter is a 1 in a billion case. Let's consider a few things: he's trained in martial arts, he has a career in forensics etc. And despite all his precautions and professionalism, there's collateral damage and I won't give names here due to spoilers, but those who've watched the show know that several innocent people died as an indirect consequence of his "hobby". Now what do you suppose would happen if some amateur with a knife decided to take justice in his own hands. I guess somewhere down the line some witness or detective would inevitably have to die since rule #1 is "don't get caught" or maybe someone who really was innocent.

It's interesting to note that in a couple of cases where IRL Dexters claimed to have been inspired by the show, both of them severely deviated from his "code": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dexter_Morgan#Connections_to_actual_crimes I really find it strange how these people claim to "identity with Dexter" when they have little in common with him. And no, I'm not blaming the show, these people are sick and would have found another excuse to kill anyway.

4. Society has rules. We tolerate one vigilante, we have to tolerate all.

This show is NOT meant to glorify vigilantism. It also shows the dark side of it, the complications that can arise from taking the law into your own hands no matter how well prepared or how "justified" you may be. Don't get me wrong, some people are so obviously scum they don't deserve to live (although again that's not why Dexter kills), but without a system it slowly sinks into chaos. And if you really really want to play Batman with a knife, don't expect the court's mercy when they catch you.

I love Dexter, it's one of my favorite shows. But I don't like it for any reason you list.

I would say it is cathartic, and I like it for that reason, but that's not entirely it either. I grew up loving Vampire movies and stories - and my friend Rand recently commented that somewhere along the way while we were growing up, Vampires went from bloody murderous villains to sparkly superheros. I like the old villainous vampires. One of my favorite recent vampire movies is 30 Days of Night - check it out if you like horror and vampires. They eat the entire town.

Dexter is the new Vampire.

I like the drama. My ex, who got me in to the show, and I used to talk about exactly how unidentifiable the character of Dexter is. Up until the finale of Season 4, we were bitching that Rita was becoming too central and that he was acting too 'human' in dealing with her.

I'm hoping Season 7 ends the series with Dexter's death. I think that would be the ultimately appropriate ending. The vampire gets staked, left in the sun to burn.

What I love about the show is the dialogue, the drama, the characters (Debra is awesome, Trinity was amazing), and the story itself.

Yes, and it's pretty good, or the first two seasons were. I lost interest while trying to get through seasons 3 and onwards

Season 3 was kind of a slump. Season 4 is incredible, John Lithgow plays the rival serial killer, it's great.

imo, better than the books

Yes, season 1 of "Dexter" is based on that book. I haven't read it, but as far as I know, they diverged quite a bit from the book already in season 1. And later seasons have been less based on the following books.

And to bluejay, yes, season 3 was a bit slow, but as DZ says, it's picked up. Season 7 is at its third episode, and it's awesome so far. :)

To DD and your original post... I'm not sure who your post is aimed at. I don't know any people who "glorify Dexter", least of all here on this website. Yes, there will always be some morons playing copycats, but that's life.

Any Game of Thrones fans want to bang their sis?

Well, that's natural to happen with any book to TV conversion.

If my sister existed, and looked like that, I'd certainly consider it ^.^

For all you who like Darkly Dreaming Dexter, have you tried "I am not a Serial Killer" by dan wells?

I'll be sure to check it out when I finish Wheel of Time and Dresden Files again. Gearing up for new books for both series. Can't wait! Cold Days and a Memory of Light....mmmmm, I get a shiver just thinking about it.

I'm not going to watch myself with the spoilers, so if anyone wants to watch Dexter without spoilers and hasn't seen "Season 7 Episode 4: Run" yet, my post might contain something you don't want to read.

You have been warned.

Dogma's Demise pointed out things in the OP I feel are propably very similar to the reason why teenage girls get fanboyish for Columbine shooters or other incomprehensible morons who've went on a killing spree to "cleanse the earth". However I don't think this line of idolizing Dexter is really the majority of the series' fans.

Points 1 to 3 are quite obvious during the series. Dexter doesn't even need to be put into a peaceful village to deviate from the code. By season 5 there's already a handful of people killed that don't fit the code but were either a nuisance or just someone who didn't fit his vision of the future(like your point 3 also points out). Ex-pedophile with no verifiable intentions of renewing his atrocities, Doakes, old friends(euthanasia). His past exploits are never re-examined, but the judicial system gets it wrong every now and then and it's fair to assume that so would a person like Dexter Morgan.

In it's admiration of vigilant justice, this show portrays Dexter as the perfect judge that never gets his assessments wrong. He is a demigod that has a sixth sense to sniff out the bad guys with the most uncanny precision. It does more to distance me from Dexter than some of his "I'm helpless and don't know how to feel but love Rita anyway" -talks ever would. Maybe the show isn't meant as a vigilante glorification, but the way it's constructed it does give off that vibe every now and then.

Complications are damn near all shown to rise from the attempts to associate a normal life into the life of a killer. A cold and calculating killing machine that lives alone and goes to work would've been quite fine throughout the series. With Rita, he's forced to rehab(that leads to Lita and killing of Doakes). With the attempt to socialize and get a friend, he gets into trouble with Prado. Most of seasons 3 to 5 problems are because he got together with Rita(fitting the killing lifestyle with a family life and faking "normal"). Season 6, trying to stop his dark passenger by studying some holy men for forgiveness and a woman who develops a lust for murder as a result of a rape. All the problems arise from Dexter trying to integrate himself into a more active social role, that he thinks others would expect him to want.

And I find that to be a compelling part of the show. This idea that with more people there'll be more problems. That and the kind of cold and calculative use of people around him. I can associate with that. I believe everyone does that when acting nice around folk they can't stand: "I better act nice in case I ever need to collaborate with this cunt". To quote DepricatedZero, "it is cathartic". And that's seems to be the concensus with those I know to watch the show.
