A Minor thing

Case

Today I heard from my father that his father is ilkely going to die tonight. Now this grandfather and I have never been close,
but he is, after all, my father's father and it does make me a little sad. I have recently watched 'Big Fish' again and those of you who know the movie,
or rather, those of you who know to appreciate it, will probably remember the title track. I find it to be an exquisite song dealing with the death of a father
and a great musical piece altogether, despite its simplicity. Vedder's voice just adds to the awesomeness of it (Pearl Jam - Man of the Hour).

Now it may sound a bit cynical but I want to know - do you have any favourites when it comes to music bemourning the loss of a loved one?

I have not had the chance yet to use this song...yet. but I have more or less chosen the song "Small Comforts" by George Hrab as my favorite grieving-song...a bit oxymoron there putting favorite and end on a negative note like that, but still. It's a great song in my opinion in dealing with a loss, either be it a pet or some one dear in the family.

I dislike grieving songs, pretty much any song that I hear at a funeral becomes a song that makes me sad. I lost a friend when I was 17 and they played "I'll be missing you" at his funeral, the puff daddy version. Now every time I hear either that or the sting version I think of my friend. Kind of nice in that I still remember him, but I can't enjoy those songs anymore.

I know exactly what you are talking about; a few years ago I was visiting my father when he got a call that his father was terminal. I had never met my grandfather in memory, save a few christmas correspondances and one awkward phone call. He died less than two weeks later. Oddly, I had not yet gotten into pearl jam well enough to be familiar with the song, but whenever I did I thought that 'Man of the Hour' fit the mood perfectly, and anytime I hear it I can only focus on this situation.

But unlike squawk, I do like 'grieving songs', because they can allow you to feel the emotions that are bubbling under to vent. Very few fit the bill, but the memories can also add another dimension to the song and make it better.

When my grandmother died, I listened to one of the more melancholic metal songs on my playlist, and Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. I was feeling them pretty heavily, not sure if it helped or not, but I liked it, and I still like both the songs.

I've never been successfull at mourning people with music, because for some reason I always muddle up the person and memory and inevitably question their judgement of said music and its appropriateness. So no, never really worked for me, unless they like my music.

Mozart Requiem? Few dislike that one.

I have lost several people over the years, and i always find that Angel's Son by Sevendust helps. Also, letters to you by Finch, Hate Me by Blue October, and Falling Into You by Mae also help. Feel better!!
