There is no record of a human culture that didn't make or use tools. Tool making is an essential part of who we are as a species, so there isn't any historical precedent that we can extrapolate from.
Sounds reasonable to me. I've heard a few prayer ring tones being played on the train and it seems really tacky to me, like having a rhinestone cross glued onto your cell phone. It's too bad that only those who acknowledge the authority of this group of clerics will have to follow the fatwa.
I understand.
I'm not sure that a lot of religious people would frame their thoughts using those exact words. Trying to keep the group or congregation together and "spreading the word" aren't sinister or hypocritical acts as you seem to be suggesting with some of your more questionable phrases.
I'm sure that they aren't saying that it's totally unimportant if a species becomes extinct, but they've probably been desensitized by the way the media reacts to the extinction of animals that can reasonably be called "unimportant".
The value of a particular life form should be judged by how...
I read the thread about this on Fark when the link was posted there a few days ago and I'm sorry to say that you guys aren't even coming close to the level of stupidity and disingenuousness that the Farkers achieved.
I was gonna go see the most recent Paganfest. The lineup wasn't the best, but the tickets were $15 and it would have been fun to see all the mallcore kids try to mosh and get thrown out by security. I can't remember why I didn't go. :|
It has been my experience that a lot of people who post diatribes against Christianity don't have much more than a passing familiarity with that religion, either. To educate themselves they watch Kent Hovind videos, read a few passages of the Bible, and off they go.
It's true that a lot of...
So are you uncomfortable because the video singles out the Koran? I know a lot of people are bothered by that. They like to focus on Christianity, which is a "soft" target, and they tread lightly when it comes to Judaism and Islam because they're afraid of being called a racist.
That's why...
I never said that these passages were never translated, and I don't know how you would jump from that to God existing. I take it that you just want to show off your knowledge of Jewish theology. Well, enlighten me. What is the history behind these passages? I love to learn.
Can't any religious...
Don't you have a public library wherever you live? An Amazon.com account? Access to Wikisource? Aren't there any thrift stores nearby? You could probably cut those book costs in half, if not more, with more careful shopping.
Nobody expects you to read and digest these works overnight. Take your...
A lot of people like to do things like this and then pat each other on the back for being enlightened enough to not be offended or grossed out or whatever.
Have you actually read the passages quoted? There aren't any subtleties of meaning or archaic language to parse, it's all pretty straightforward.
GoodKat, when you get something wrong, and you know that you're wrong, simply saying "they'll say I was wrong" won't make you right.
Hate to burst your bubble, but those quotes refer to people who practice magic, as well as false prophets and ones who follow foreign gods. They would only apply to TheBookOfJoe's mother if she was was using magic or lying about having a vision to lure people away from God.
