I think its just all part of being human. In the past people have used religion to get rid of the "Is this it?" feeling, aswell as to answer questions that people didn't know the answers to. Conspiracy theories can make people think there is more to life than the mundane, aswell as give reasons...

Yeah, I'm hooked on it :) The BBC seem to have started doing decent docs again recently (which is great for those of us too poor for the propper doc channels!)
